I am cooking 48 brats tomorrow for the first time on my new XL BGE... any recommendations? Or, lessons learned by others? I'm not in the mood to embarass the BGE community.
Any advice?

I like to precook them in beer and sliced onions and then after 15-20 minutes toss them on the grill. careful not to break the skin.
-
go indirect as there will be lots of good juices that will cause flare ups. Have fun!
-
So... throw in the Plate Setter and have some fun?

Your egg won't flare if the domes closed. I par cook them in a foil boat filled with sour kraut for a spell and then grill'em direct. the pre-steam, lets you cook them without having to make them black.

Yep, that's what I would do. Any more than about 4-5 brats, I go indirect. Even usually with 4 or 5, I sometimes keep the dome open to avoid the nasty smoke. Have fun

best not to overcook 'em. the longer on the grill, the better the chance to bust the casing and get flare ups. get 'em up in the dome for better temperature control. you can work the dome, keeping it closed to control flare ups, but watch for flash backs.
if you have a turkey roaster, you can fill it with beer and onions. dump all the brats in after cooking to keep 'em in warm and moist for extended period.www.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc. -
Do what Richard said, simmer not boil in beer and onions for 15-20 minutes. At this point the brats are completely cooked and all you have to do is grill them directly to put some color on them. -RP

400 on a raised grid if you have it

I simmer mine in beer and onions after cooking.

Funny -- I'm cooking 84 tonight. I use a 2nd tier, with the plate setter at 275 for appox 45 min. Load both tiers, careful to stay over the plate setter. Cook to a temp of 170-180. I use a couple chunks of whatever wood I have, Oak tonight but prefer Cherry, or apple with one hickory. Could only get 62 on, cooking 2nd round now.
Beer and onion (throw in butter), boil is also awesome......use cheap beer -
There are way more than 48 brats here. Fidel is worse (and he admits it)
