I bought a large green egg a week ago and it's arriving Wednesday. I leave Thursday morning for California. My buddy was layed off from his job a year ago here in Minnesota. He said the hell with this and moved out to California. He picked up all his stuff one day and said I'm leaving for California and will be back in 1 year. His year is up and asked if I wanted to fly out and ride back with him. Lets see, take time off from work, see the Diamondbacks, Rangers, Royals baseball games, drink beer all day long, and eat bbq in in Texas and Kansas City? Ummmm, yes please! In Minnesota here we don't have a lot of options for lump charcoal. It's Menards, Home Depot, or Lowes for options. I have been talking with Adam here on egghead forum about lump charcoal. He told me to stay away from anything from the stores above and even offered to sell me some of his quality personal lump since we are almost neighbors we realized! (next town east) Since I will be driving in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oaklahoma, Missouri, and Iowa I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place for lump. I'm guessing we are taking the major freeway through each state. Don't know how much I can fit in his car with 3 people in it. Hoping for a few bags. I want my virgin egg to be good it's first time! Sorry, went a little over board with the last comment. Also if anyone has some suggestions on places to eat along the way that would be great! Bbq anything and anything spicy! Thanks for the help and input!

BBQ Island in Tempe, AZ has a great selection of lump. They even have the Ono brand from Hawaii, plus you can draw a beer while shopping there. It is the most amazing BBQ shop I've ever seen and the guys there are great. -RP

AZRP ...I have a sales rep "pitching " me on the ONO charcoal ... are you using it? The prices the distributor is quoting me would make it quite expensive for us to resell ..is it worth is? Seems to be in 10 pound bags ...is that how it comes out there?

Ono did not seem that great. It's claim to fame is to burn super hot, but I didn't notice a difference. I would use Royal Oak over it, especially due to the price.

No Fred, I haven't tried it yet but Reelgem got some, I'll go downstairs and ask her how it was. -RP

Fred they said it was fantastic and well worth the money. -RP

I have used a few bags of Ono, at least here in arizona it comes in 20 pound bags, i have never seen a 10 pound bag of Ono. overall i would rate it comparable to royal oak as far as quality if not slightly better. The only real drawback is that it burns fast, and generates more ash. It does have a mild flavor, similar to mesquite, but not nearly as strong.

thanks for the input. Is it expensive in your area also?Fred A. Bernardo , owner of Tasty Licks BBQ Supply in Shillington, Pa.

Find a Sam's in Texas and you might be able to get some Frontier Lump. It is $14.27 for 40# bag.

At the risk of being chastized. I carry 40lb bags of lump for $22. Great selection of wood, rubs and sauces in the KC area.

Maybe a little late on the reply but in AZ go to BBQ Islands in Tempe AZ off the 10 freeway. They have the best selection in the Phoenix area
