Our flag is 233 years old today.

History of the Flag
The American flag was created in a 1777 resolution that ordered the flag to be "made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

Two stripes and two stars were added in 1794, but the extra two stripes were removed in 1818. President Taft arranged the stars in six horizontal rows of eight each in 1912. With the final addition of Hawaii's star in 1960, the rows were changed to nine rows of stars staggered horizontally and eleven vertical rows.
