Fire box crack question from BGE newbie

Hi everyone - we just picked up a new Large BGE at the Seattle Eggfest yesterday. We bought one of the demo Eggs. We were looking over the Egg this morning (haven't used it yet - so just used once at the Eggfest by someone else) and it looks like there is a crack in the fire box. We thought there were no cracks in a new fire box, but this one looks like it was meant to be there - i.e. the fire box doesn't look broken. I would just call the distributor but they are closed today. Any thoughts? Is this crack supposed to be there? See pictures. Thanks in advance!

That's the newly redesigned firebox. It is meant to be like that. It is an expansion joint of sorts that was added to help prevent cracking.

It's supposed to be there That's a stress relief cut on the new eggs.

Yes, that's the way they are being made now. Must be a pretty new firebox, as I think these have been phased in over the past few months. I bought my new large BGE about 6 weeks ago and it looks the same.
Here's a link to some discussion on the new firebox:

Sure looks like that is the way they are coming now as yesterday when I was at the Eggfest the new ones had the same cut and I ment to ask about it but forgot as I was OD'ed on all the great food :P

Thanks everyone for the quick responses - glad to know that this is the way it should be.

Blue crab, I got my new LBGE a couple months ago and thought the same thing when I opened the box. Since it was brand new and a perfect line, I assumed it was supposed to be there. I'm glad you asked the question, it's interesting to know that only us newbies have this new design upgrade for preventing further cracks.

Yep, we assumed the same thing because it was a perfect line, but I thought I would ask just in case!! Glad it helped you too.
