Another Attempt at Carving

Been wanting to try this again so I bought a small watermelon a couple of days ago in anticipation. Tonight my wife mentioned that she needed a table decoration for their lunch table at school tomorrow so that was all the excuse I needed.
Not bad for a second attempt but I have so much to learn...lots of mistakes and many leaves weren't symmetrical (maybe the symmetry isn't that important since it looks more natural.
Anyway, here it is:

Big Daddy - You teaching yourself??? That's nice work!! Thai carving is something you either 'get' or 'don't'. You obviously GET it!! Nice job!! I am impressed!

Thanks LC! Yes I am...the wonder of the youtube video...piano and guitar are next...lol.

Bruce....I don't like it when other people post pics to other peoples pics posts....however....lol...your work is so far superior to this pic, and I think it may give you some creative ideas. This melon was carved to teach students "inverted" techniques.... It was not intended as a display piece, but to simply show different techniques. Notice paper thin pedals, reverse carved leaves, etc..... Now that you are figuring this whole thing out, this should give you a few ideas. I admire you for your efforts. (and yes, I did get your email, but still waiting for a reply from CA) Keep up the great work! This was the only pic I had in photobucket. Let me know if you want more, I can send to the side. Honestly, once you get the hang of the Thai techniques, you just need to see it, and you can do it. (I think you know what I mean by that....

Verrrrry nice work! :cheer: Impressive!
I have not carved food but it looks like somethin I'd like to try. Well, I did carve shrunkin heads out of apples many years ago. :S
Keep up the good work. "Food for the eye's". -
Wow, that's cool LC. I want to try the rose technique next so we'll see how that goes. May wait until I find the right knife first.
Dr. Z, I understand buddy. That's the very reason I spent months laughing that you had "soner" instead of "sooner" in your signature...something about the quality of education! lol (you started it).
Thanks for all the kind words, folks. Kinda fun playing.

Looks good Bruce. What tool set did you end up getting? And where?
Mike -
Thanks Mike. I don't have one yet. I'm just using my 3 1/2" Shun paring knife but I have to admit that basically holding the blade is making me a bit nervous. Looks like I'll be making several more for this Friday's high school graduation so I better get busy. Little Chef is actually working on a set for me so I'm looking forward to that.

Here is a book on the subject. Also this site has great products and recipes.

Thanks Richard,
I was actually just on their website looking at the pairing knife. I get their monthly newsletter and have looked at ordering the book. I guess I need to just do it.
Bruce -
I think that looks incredible

That looks pretty darn good to me. Not sure where you are located, but we have this place in NoVa:
