For years now I've shirked the attempts of friends to have me buy into the magic that is The Egg. I've laughed at and mocked its "space age ceramics", even suggested using Eggs to replace the tiles on the Space Shuttle. Admittedly I've very much enjoyed adding "egg" to anything and everything when speaking to Egg owners. I've even sampled the goods, some of my favorite brisket and ribs ever, and yes, I did go to "Eggs by the Bay".... twice... pulling my hat down as owners compared recipies and commented on what wood chips to use when cooking pork vs. beef vs. pizzas.
But no longer, I have moved to AZ, away from my "suppliers/dealers" of brisket and ribs. The pool and backyard remodel starts early June and I fear that a Large Egg will be necessary for the unveiling.
So the question becomes, what's first on the menu? I was thinking pulled pork butt or ribs, (I am not going to go out and attempt a brisket first in front of long time Egg owners who will be in attendance). What was everyone's inaugural attempt? Also, what is the best place to start for recipes on the web for real BBQ (rubs, etc)?
Thanks!

Chicken is an easy first cook. You can do parts or whole. I like it done direct, raised grid, at about 350-375. It gets the skin nice and crispy. If you season it right, it is easily the best part of the chicken.
Congrats on the decision to get your egg. Don't forget to post pics. -
Welcome to the forum. Your in the right spot. My first cook was a butt. Spatchcock is always a good cook. Maybe some wings up high in the dome. What eggcessories will you have to egg with ie plate setter? Tim

Drunken chickens are easiest and very economical....I've cooked quite a few and w/ a family of 5 I usually only cook 2 of the small $5 hens...That's enough meat fer all of us and maybe 1 leftover meal fer 1....Variety of ways you can marinate, baste, season. I did boneless breast last week and they were excellent too and alot better fer you then McD's nuggetsHunting-Fishing-Cookin' on my EGG! Nothing else compares!

Where are you in AZ? -RP

For a larger gathering pork butt is much easier than brisket, but I would start with a couple a easier cooks such as Spatchcock chicken, or even beer butt chicken to get a feel for the egg.
Good luck and throw on some ABT's for the Egger's on hand! -
Thanks all for the advice, I'm trying to figure out if I should get it earlier, but with all the construction that will take place in the backyard I'll wait until mid-June to get it. BTW I'm in Scottsdale and am pricing out dealers in the area. I'll look up a recipe for Spatchcock.

Go to BBQ Island in Tempe, great dealer. -RP

Thanks RP, I called them yesterday actually and they were the best price for the large egg + nest etc.
And thanks for the reminder Brokersmoker. ABTs, will certainly be on the menu. -
"ABTs, will certainly be on the menu."
...and I look forward to eating them.
