OT; garbage can smoker & ribs (kinda long)

Firetruck

A friend at work was talking about needing a smoker. He knows how good the egg is because I won't shut up about it. He was saying he wanted to build one. I told him about some garbage can smokers I had seen so we began to look on the net for some.
I was surprised when he called me the next day and said "I'm on the way to lowes, wanna go?" Like any good friend "I said sure I'll go with ya!" See that's what's wrong with the world today...no one goes to lowes to look at garbage cans with their friends anymore. JK.
When we got there, we began brainstorming about how to make it work. We went home, cut out the bottom, drilled holes, added bolts to hold the grates, and cut an old freon cylinder in half to make a fire box.
We cooked on it a couple of times and today was the first low and slow.
I learned to cook ribs, butts, chicken, etc. on the egg so this has taken a lot of learning. It obviously don't hold a candle to the egg but just to sit around and visit with folks all day and cook, it was pretty fun.
On the ribs I coated with bat byrons and then brown sugar. They actually turned out very good.
Just something to play with

Is that the one they sell at Home Depot?
-
Not as a smoker. It's just a plain ole garbage can that we made into a smoker.
-
NICE! Here is what I used to use for a smoker before the egg:
Flower pot and electric burner:
Pie pan for wood chunks:
Drip pan grate:
Thermometer placed in lid:
All put together:
It used to hold a solid 250, even in winter. Lid was crazy awkward and heavy but it worked great. So great that when I got the egg, my neighbor asked if he could have my flower pot smoker... -
I bet it did hold temp good. I saw Alton Brown do one very much like yours.
-
Hence, my playful joking about how the egg is a glorified flower pot.
Nicely done! -
Thanks for the info JoJo. I've had my eyes set on building an ugly drum smoker for a year now but can't seem to find a clean 55 gal drum that had food grade stuff in it. That's a pretty neat set up you did and some helluva good looking ribs you did. You da man!!

Ok, so a couple of weeks ago, I posted about my butt cook on a flower pot. Even put up several pics of the start of the cook. Needless to say, I was more than a little annoyed when my post didn't last 5 minutes before it got deleted!
But trash cans and someone else's flower pot are ok?I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Wait til you try to use that in the winter, I started with a drum smoker, gave up in the winter. -RP

I guess you do what you gotta do to have BBQ.
It just makes us appreciate the EGG and how much we want to spread the word of the EGG.
Least you had a good time. -
I have always heard that there are health and toxicity concerns with cooking anything on or in something that is galvanized.
True, or false? -
These guys suggest using a galenized trashed can is a bad idea:

Pretty good, thanks for taking the time to post.

no issue....
commonly repeated, but generally misunderstood myth
if it were true, stainless steel would be more dangerous than galvanized steel -
...and they are wrong
-
Injinuity at it's finest!!! Look fun to make but of course nothing comparable to the egg.... :silly:Hunting-Fishing-Cookin' on my EGG! Nothing else compares!

Smoken! You did it! Tim

Yeah, what does the USDA know. Idiots (psst! That was sarcasm).

I would still go for the flowerpot method over the galvanised trash can method. I didn't drop a grand on an egg for nothing. -
galvanized fumes ain't gonna happen in an egg or a smoker. even if they did, they certainly can't kill you.
you love myth busting you say, why not read into this one. -
you're right, it was more about spending the least amount of $ and seeing how much we can do with it.
-
Randy, it'll probably never happen but ya never know. We may take it to the deer camp. I'd never take the egg up there.
-
JoJo you americans never cease to impress me   Beautiful Felicidades!!!!!!
-
JoJo, those ribs look fabulous. Love the garbage can cook. Thanks for sharing. You do know you could bought one for only $395 dollars, lol.

Thanks Beli

Yea I know. I have 25 bucks and the gas it took to get to lowes in it.

Good to know someone has a high IQ JoJo!!!!

When I'm cooking for a large crowd I will use 55 gallon drums. You drill holes in the sides near the top and push rebar through them. Pour a whole bag of charcoal in the bottom and light.
You then take large skewers and weave them down through the ribs. You then hang the skewers on the rbar and cover the top with burlap. I then take a bbq thermometer and push it through the burlap. You control the temp with the burlap. If it is too cool pull the burlap back to give it more air. It the temp gets too hot close the burlap a little.
I used to have pictures of 3 barrels full of ribs but I lost them when a hard drive crashed about 6 months ago.
