Soldering Iron Cheese Smoking Help

I am planning on smoking some cheese using a soldering iron and wood chips since the weather is warming. Any advice or tips? Seems like maybe the chips would just burn up with an iron through the bottom vent. Thanks for any help!

Do NOT soak the chips.Put them in an old can and stick the iron in the can with the chips.You can add a pan of ice on the platesetter to keep the temp down.Works Great!You may have to wiggle the iron once or twice.

Firetruck, is this considered cold smoking? I bet if you were to add your favorite spices to the cheeze, (fresh minced garlic, onion, pepper, whatever) it would be awesome.

Yes it is cold smoke. However if the ambient temp is above 70 or so you should put a pan of ice under the cheese.

Notice in Firetruck's link, he mentions buying a new soldering iron. You definitely want to buy a new one, and use it only for smoking.

Don't use the one from your tool cabinet with the lead solder residue, flux and tinning paste on it.

I just smoked 8 lbs. of cheese this morning!
I didn’t use an ice pan thinking that I’m still early enough in the season, but the ambient temp did hit the 70’s today and I probably should have done the ice tray. I just use a shallow foil pan, filled and frozen during the summer months
Anyway, I didn’t have any melting, but the cheese did get softer then I would have liked. However, it’s all looking good now wrapped and in the fridge.
I use the “bean can” method with the can filled with apple-wood chips and a 30 W. iron. There is NO NEED to wet the chips! That may even be detrimental to the iron!…And thirdeye is right! A new iron or at the very least a new tip for the iron is a must!
