What is the real scoop on changing a gasket?

Stopped by my local BGE dealer yesterday to talk to them about replacing my felt gasket. Told them what I had read and seen on the forum. They said there was no need to remove the top and to just scrape the old one off and put on a new one. Ok, this sounds very easy, no alignment to worry about etc., but from what I have read the experts here do take off the top, use acetone to remove old glue, and a get it smooths as a baby's bottom. Comments appreciated.

I feel it's just much easier to scrape the dome gasket off with the dome removed and sitting upside down...I do try to get the surfaces as clean as possible within reason...certainly not all pearly white, and I use rubbing alcohol in place of acetone...if you don't feel like it's a pain to do with the dome on, then by all means leave it on...I use one of those razor blade paint scrapers and some scotch brite pads..

I cleaned the top and left it bare and put a nomex gasket on the bottom.

I just did mine yesterday. Took about 2 - 3 hours... working at a pace I could maintain (slowly). I looked at a couple of videos and just followed them.
I did take it apart. Can't imagine doing the top any other way. A nice tip is cutting a piece of cardboard to use a spray shield for the inside.
Remember to pre-shrink the NOMEX. 45 minutes in a hot dryer. If you use the BGE replacement gasket, I recommend doing the top and the bottom. The hinge is set up for 1/4 inch. Just doing one side will leave 1/8" unaccounted for. -
i dont use a gasket but if you go thru all the work to change it you will want to adjust it anyways, it could be the reason you burnt your first one, not being adjusted properly. i find it easier to open the dome and pop the springs off than using the clips and fighting the springs.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

It will take you three times longer to do it with the top on, maybe even longer than that. I would remove it.
Ohhh, and even though I'm from GA, I liked fishing Red Lake a few years back.
