Fire Ring Indentations

On the fire ring in my large, there are 5 semi-circular indentations on the top edge. What purpose do they serve? Does it matter if the plate setter partially covers one or more of them?
My apologies if this has been answered previously. I'm not yet so great at finding info in prior posts, but am trying.

What money? I never saw any of it..... truth be known, those dang pilots muscled it off me. Then a rather large stewardess shoved me out of the plane!
