Pork Price Update

I just priced butts at the discount grocery where I buy meat(all kinds) in bulk and butts are now $1.79/lb. Yowsa! I normally buy and stock up when they're .99/lb. so they've almost doubled in price!!! The store owner doesn't know if or when prices will come down to regular levels. :(

Won't be anytime soon. Briskets did go down .15lb last week.

When I bought mine last time it cost me over 18.00 for a 7.33# roast, that's 2.46 a #. I just thought that was the price of them. Wow now that sounds expensive.

I put two racks of spares (5.5 lbs) on this morning that I got at H.E.B. for $1.00 a pound about three weeks ago. They look very meaty.

Mark, I noticed the same thing over the weekend at RD. Then I saw pork picnics at Publix for 99 cents a lb. I guess we are going to have to shop around.

Cheap? When you buy 80 or 100 lbs. at a time like I do for bacon and pulled pork donations for the high school soccer concession, it's a big deal.

Mark, just fyi, the IGA up in Kinsman.

Prices on butts in my area did creep up a little recently. I usually get mine at Sam's club and they had been $1.29 per pound for a long time, but now they're up to $1.39. Still not close to the price you are talking about, but does support the fact that the price is going up.
That was as of a week or so ago, and I'll be heading to Sam's at lunchtime to pick up a bag of lump so I'll check the price again while I'm there. -
When you lose 40%+ during a cook the yield can be more expensive than beef.

The Business Costco in our area, Hayward CA, has bone in pork butt for $1.15 lb

Do you have any locally owned stores in your area? I have a local store I deal with, if I am buying a case or more. I ask for a case price. I am sure if you told them you were raising money for the soccer team they would give you a decent price. Worth a try
-
I usually get them by the case at Restaurant Depot at 81¢ per pound. Last week their case price was $1.41.
Not going to be pretty. -
Yeah, that's a significant jump.
-
I just checked over at Sam's Club, they're getting $1.49 lb. -RP

I posted about a month ago that prices were shooting up due to a cut back in production and an 8% increase in meat exports to other countries. Farmers got hurt badly last year so now we're having the "rubberbanding" impact of supply and demand.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
-
Yeah Ron. That pretty much sums up what my meat monger told me. Wish I had stocked up a month ago now.....

Yeah, I just got back from one of my local Sam's clubs and it's the same price. Up a dime a pound from last week. -
I cooked pork picnics Friday night instead of pork butts. I will not make that mistake again. I gave all 20# away. It did not even come close to the pork butts I made before I went on vacation.
-
I just came back from St. Maartens and it is still selling there for $6/lb. We are very fortunate here in the states. I will buy less but keep on buying it because the family loves it! But it may be time for some squirrel, rabbit and deer recipes!

Thanks Mark, that's about 45 minutes from my house. Not sure it would be worth it. I'm going to have to keep an eye on the prices and buy it when it goes on sale. Do you think it would freeze ok? If so how long can you keep things in the freezer before you have to use it up?
-
well in my area they are at 1.99per/lb. so yes getting spendy!!
