I think it is all over the board as far as what most people use. 5 & 7qt units are popular.
-
I have a 5 qt that I like.
-
It all depends on what you're cooking and the how many you're cooking for. When I cook for a crowd I use my 12 qt. If there isn't a crowd, I use a smaller DO, around 5 to 7 qts.
-
Wow Rebecca. 12qts? Do you bathe in that thing when not cooking?
-
It is a tight squeeze, lol.
I used it to fit in two 5 lb chuck roasts to make Clay's Pulled Beef the other week. I had to cram the chucks in it to fit. -
we bought the large size - are planning on buying the mini to put in our motor home.

i use this and the lid doubles as a frying pan

mine are around 7 or 8. i use a lodge 12 deep camp oven with legs and an inexpensive enamelled one from marshalls and a lecruesett. the marshals one is the way to go, easy cleanup, no seasoning, and your not afraid to ding itfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I use a #12 Lodge camp style DO on the large BGE.Knoxville, TN

i have both the lodge 5quart and 12quart Dutch ovens. a large 12" dutch oven fits perfectly on the spider so that its close to the coals. i use it mostly to brown ,sear , or blacken meats, or doing larger cooks like barbacoa, or pot roasts. the size is very nice because you can do both direct close to coals, or indirect cooking.
i also have a 7qt enamel cast iron that the wife bought from HSN or QVC or something. its a pretty good oven for the price, and works well for acidic foods, so that i do not have to pay as much attention to prevent burning :woohoo:
the smaller 5qt i use for indirect or on a grate for sides when cooking steaks, burgers, meats etc. it takes up less space and works well for sides that you want in a pot like baked beans, stews, soups, or other items of that nature.
If you were to get just one DO, get around a 7-9 quart, 5" deep, and enamel coated if you can find one. I have had a hard time finding another good size 7-9qt oven like the one the wife got for a good price. LC are the best ones, but the prices are absurd. -
5 qt Cast Iron and 2 smaller Emile Henry Flame versions.Visit my blog, dedicated to my Big Green Egg Recipies at http://www.bigtsbge.blogspot.com You can also follow my posts on FaceBook under the name Keep On Eggin' or the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Keep-On-Eggin/198049930216241
