Maverick ET-73 concerns

The first time I used mine, I could not pick up a signal from my garage to my living room (one wall) so I did my overnight without it. I did the antenna mod. and now it can pick up the signal all the way to the back of the house! My last overnight (second use with the ET-73) the pit probe sometimes resistered 10 deg. over my dome thermo , and sometimes 10 deg. under. The meat probe resistered HHH constantly until I removed it from the meat and reinserted then it would read a temp for about 4 seconds and then go back to HHH. I moved the probe wires around with no change in the reading. I restarted the maverick 2-3 different times with the same results.Talk about chasing temps all night, I was better off without it. I calibrated all probes and dome thermo at the same time in boiling water with good results. I don't know if I should buy new probes or stick the maverick in the back of my junk drawer for a couple years :(

I'm on my 2nd Maverick. Piece of junk in my eyes. I have calibrated all other thermometers to make sure temp measurements are accurate and Maverick is always inconsistent. Others have had success, but thumbs down for me.

Get rid of it!
If you can send it back do it.
Put your money in a stoker or guru. -
I've had mine two years. It has always been accurate. Range is enough for me (maybe 35 feet). I set the alarms on overnights and it hasn't let me down.
I see these posts about problems on this forum at regular intervals. Some folks have no problems others are concerned.
Quality control may kill these folks. -
Now you have me wondering about my ET-71 wireless thermometer. I kept losing the signal and the chicken temp seemed a little high. When it reached 180 I went out and stuck another Maverick thermometer in the chicken and it registered 167.
I should check both of these with boiling water. Can these Mavericks be calibrated? -
No you can not calibrate the maverick probes. I may use my et-73 to cook with but I use my thermapen for the final say. Tim

valrune, How did you do your antenna mod? Do you have any pic's? Tim

I'm on my second ET-73, returned the first one, bad transmitter. Would like more details on your antenna mod to increase the range.

I have a food probe failure on my first use of the Maverick et 73. I was warned by Bacchus not to buy it because I didn't need it. He was right. However, I do like the dome probe. I am sitting in my office and I can quickly look at my dome temp. I am watching my egg get to 325 as I cook a ham. I will order another food probe and try it again. If the next one fails after one cook I am done!

I am happy for your success with the maverick . I was hoping to get some sleep with mine but because of the crazy readings I was up all night.

BTW, My last cook was a pork shoulder, came out eggcellent! It didn't last long enough for pics

Which mod did you use, length and gauge of wire?
GG -
I modified the receiver by using wire I found in my garage. I think its about a 16 ga. and I used a 6.5" piece. I didn't use solder, I just firmly stuck it in the ant. hole and when the case was closed it holds the wire securely. I notched a small hole in the case just big enough for the wire to pass through. Seems to work great.

I have some interesting information about the mod which I will post when I get my ET-73 back together and the pictures up on the forum.
Thanks for the information & the post.
Glad it seems to work for you.
