You can easily get 3 butts on a large. Do a forum search and you will see many posts on this topic.
As long as the butts are all not touching they will cook seperately so it should take no more time to do 3 than it did one. Put your thermometer in the smallest butt as it will probably finish first. -
That's a good sign that you have a real party planned. Just what vidalia said. If you use a second level for that third butt, make sure your dome therm isn't sticking into your butt...that can throw you for a loop when your puttin a little extra pressure on yourself.
Best of luck, you'll have some great food at the end!

No problem with three, Ive done four on one grid. The thing to remember is you will have three times the grease, so have an adequate drip pan. -RP

i also have used one grate for four butts... just make sure you rotate the butts so the outer edge doesnt burn (the part not protected by the platesetter)

Kim, do you have to worry about the butt sticking over the portion of the plate setter that is open to the flame below? I have had some problem with chicken burning that was over that area but that was at 350-400. I doubt I could get 3 butts to sit over my platesetter on my LBGE with some of it hanging over the open space. I know I will soon do 2 butts and was wondering about this. I plan to use a 9 x 13 drip pan for those two butts. Thanks!
