Cheap tenderloin for V-Day!

Picked this up at the local Loblaws - beef tenderloin for $15.41/kg - that's $6.99/lb for you Yanks. This is a 3.3 lb chunk. I've seen it as low as $9.99 before, but never this low. It's advertised as "select or higher", so the smart money is on that it's a chunk of select given the price. Not that it matters - with the tenderloin there is little difference between a prime, choice, and select due to the inherent lack of marbling.

I might have to go back and pick up another chunk before the sale is over!

I would take a Truckload at that price!Like you say there is not a big difference in tenderloin grades.

i think the differences that i have found have been in buying the whole tenderloin. the select ones (we see them around 4.99 a pound) are often poorly butchered. sometimes two pieces, thin at the short loin end which ends up as skewered bits or "tenderloin tips"

then you get a few decent filets, and a smallish roast. just kind of thin and choppy.
the better tenderloin seem to be bigger. and once you separate the chain, still deliver good sized filets and less s/crap.

We have a Gordin's in a nearby town.They sell the cheaper tloins and you are correct,as usual,they are smaller and not as neatly trimmed/butchered.
