Arthur Bryant\'s in KC?

Hi all,

My wife and I are taking the kids to Kansas City next weekend to see Science City in one of the old, rehabbed train stations. I noticed that our hotel is only about three miles from the original Arthur Bryant's BBQ.

Has anyone been there? Is it worth the trip? Are there any other que joints that would be a better choice?

Thanks in advance!

fc :)

I wouldn't miss it for the world. Get the burnt ends sandwich or the brisket sandwich. Go hungry.
  • Union Station, what a history it has in KC. I like Jack Stacks to.
    Enjoy KC.

Everyone has their favrites. Bryants is good, but I prefer Rosdale or Jackstack BBQ. But this is Kansas City the BBQ capitol of the world. You would be hard pressed to find bad Que here. Union station is a wonderful old building. Enjoy your trip.
  • We had a great time when we stopped in a couple of years ago. Good portions and I must say everything we had exceeded our expectations. Parking is a little tight though.

  • I would recommend Smokin Guns. Only open m-f. Maybe the best burnt ends in KC

As a side note; my grandfather worked in a barbershop in union station. He was there the day of the union station massacre, where Frank Nash and several FBI agents were killed in a gangland shootout trying to rescue Nash. I don't how many times I heard that story.
  • I would like to hear it once.

Short story....I think it was in the 1930's. Nash, a bank robber, escaped from Levenworth. Recaptured and brought by train back to KC. An attempt was made to free him by "friends", one of which was Pretty Boy Floyd. This resulted in a old style gangland shoot out, tommyguns were blasting away. One face of the big clock was shattered by stray bullets. Several FBI agents and Nash were killed. I remember Grandpa showing me, as a child, the chips in the stone on the south side over the entrance, made by stray bullets.

    Where is that one?

Smokestack used to have the best ends -- 20 years ago---but they went downhill. Smokehouse in Gladstone was the same way. They both lost a lot when they started expanding....same with Bryant's.

The original Bryant's is certainly not the best BBQ in KC, but it is one of those historical things that just begs for a BBQ fan to at least say they've done it when given the opportunity. I go just about every time I'm in KC.
  • I went to Arthur Bryant's for the first time when was last KC three years ago; it's a great town! That stop was one of the highlights of a great weekend. Enjoy!

Jacks Stack is down on the Plaza. Not to far away.
Then you can walk it off around the Plaza shopping!!!

  • They are down at 12th and Swift I think it is. Not far off I-35 down by one of the casinos. Kind of the north kansas city area I guess.

great sausage, fries, potato casserole, everything.
  • It's been a while since I have been there but the BBQ is great.

Arthur Bryant's isn't in the best part of town so plan to go during the daylight hours (unless that has changed).

My two brothers currently work as waiters at JackStack on the plaza and like it a lot.

    Have fun!!
  • I agree with Fidel, AB's isn't the best, but you HAVE to go to the original off of Brooklyn! It is an experience.

I also have to 2nd that 20 years ago Smokestack (now Jack Stacks) was not to be beat!! That is what I grew up on.

Also, give Oklahoma Joe's a go. Good stuff!!

Thanks for the great advice, I really appreciate it. We're going to the original location....I think it's 18th & Brooklyn.

We're going for dinner on Saturday, so I guess we can't avoid the after dark advice. I'm sure we'll be fine, I've survived worse areas.

  • Don't worry too much..... just don't drive off on the side roads and leave your car running on the side of the road with the keys in it.

You are right off of the highway, not too rough!
