Excited to try my new BGE cast iron grate. Can I just start using it, or is there anything I need to do to it first? Thx!

most i might do is cook some sausages on it. ;) any seasoning you put on will burn off the first time you sear anything on it. what you will want to do is wash it first

I just put mine in the egg and had at it. If u do wash it i wouldn't use soap just run water over it and dry. if your storing it it's also wise to wipe a little veg. oil on it!

Just put it on the egg and listen for the crack.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

in the "good ole days" we use to gather pine cones, set them on fire and get a big mound of coals. Then, we would pull back half the mound and put the new CI cookware in it and then cover it up with the hot coals. Then let it burn till all the coals were ash. Then pull it out and once it was stone cold wash it with water. And that stuff never saw soap in its life! I have a cast iron skillet that is over 30 years old and was "cured" in this manner and it is the best pan in the world to cook fried chicken in. In fact, I think I will fry some in it tonight.
