New Firebox Design
The Naked Whiz
Posts: 7,777
Did I miss it, or has there really been nothing posted anywhere about a new firebox design? My dealer just showed us an announcement from BGE about a new firebox design that is being phased in as old inventories are depleted. What I saw was a bad copy of the announcement, but from the picture on the announcement it looks like what they did was something like if you took an existing firebox and made a vertical saw cut down the back of the box. This would presumably allow expansion and contraction and prevent breakage.
There was no word of a similar change to the firering, but then I've always thought that firering breakage was pretty rare, based on the number of posts on the Big Green Egg forum.
So, it should be very interesting to see how the new firebox does in the field. I'm sure we have all wondered about how bad the warantee expense must be to BGE to replace broken fireboxes. Here's to hoping that they have solved the problem.

We received the same notice this week.
We see more FB warranty situations than FR, probably 4-1. But not that many overall.-SMITTY

I'm surprised it's that many fire rings. I would have guessed 20 to 1 or higher. But I was surprised that I learned about the new design from my dealer. I usually hear about stuff like that on the forum long before my dealer knows about it. I guess the skunk works kept this one secret, lol!The Naked Whiz

That's interesting, and "should" work. I wonder if one were to cut an old one before it breaks, would it help ? (mine hasn't broke yet)
-
I did not hear about the firebox upgrade.
I heard they were changing the hindge on the mini.
I heard they are changing the dome on the extra large. -
Won't be long that instead of saying, "I own a Large Big Green Egg." we will be saying, "I own a 2010 Large Big Green Egg, Model #1010-415.65." LOL

I often toyed with the idea of cutting one in half and then see what happened. I still have a brand new one in my garage. I'm just afraid that it might break from the shock of the sawing. The Naked Whiz

interesting to see if it works, mine kept breaking after breakingfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

If you know anyone in the masonry or flooring business have them cut it with their brick saw. It uses water to cool the blade and would prevent any heat buildup. I doubt it is necessary though but would hate to risk having yours break from bad advice.
-
Na, that stuff is so soft, it will dip into it like warm butter. An angle grinder with a diamond blade would be the tool of choice for me. Dusty though.
-
Tim,
I've cut so many things with a grinder, those ceramics wouldn't be a problem at all. It would be tough to get it through a tile saw though. Unless your talking about the gas powered, hand held, wet, circular saw. Them are rowdy -
Interestingly enough, my fire ring became a 2 piece model just this past weekend. First time that has happened. However, it broke almost exactly in two equal pieces, so no big deal.
-
I always saw-cut my cast iron grids through the outer ring in a couple of places to relieve any heat stress which might cause them to break. Probably a good idea for the firebox as well.

Can you tell me more about the changes in the XL dome piece. I have been lurking on here learning about eggs and will probably purchase one this spring. I am interested in the XL and my one concern is that the dome seems pretty shallow.
-
Can't say I blame the BGE company. The warranty replacement cost is likely significant. A little preventive measure could go a long way.

Fellow Traveler, Welcome to the forum. I would hate to tell you my version of a conversation i had with Bruce Bohannon because I am sure I will screw it up. Let me suggest you get it straght from the horses mouth so to speak.
Call the mothership and if you have to leave a message let them have your cell number because the call back might be the next day and you don't want to be waiting around the phone all that time. (770)938-9394
This way you will get it right. Tim -
My dealer got in a shipment of eggs with the new cut firebox. He wasn't informed of the change. Needless to say, he was a bit concerned when he opened the boxes. :S
-
In talking with Bruce at BGE, a new lid for the XL is coming later in the year, more dome height from what I hear.
-
Leroy,
Is that the one with the 4 barrel and headers?

I have two friends that both have the XL. There is about 2 inches of space between their plate setter and the grill (and the legs obviously are very short on the plate setter). I bought my XL a couple of months ago and there is about 6 inches of space. Looks as if they have noched the fire ring in three places to get more distance. Has anyone else noticed this change?
-
I'm going to get my next one with leather and a navigation system!
-
That change was done about a year ago for the XL.
-
I already fixed the problem of a cracked firebox. I cut my original large firebox in half 5 years ago and there has been no structural breakage so far.
