So I got a dome thermometer to replace the standard equipment. I know, that is a stretch. But it was not that expensive. And I put the BGE, Tru Tell, and Thermapen in boiling water and the tru tell and thermapen were right on the money. The BGE thermometer was about 10 degrees cool. Plus the Tru-Tell has bigger numbers so my old eyes can see it better!!!

Tel Tru, Tru Tel, you get the idea.
-
you couldn't get it past the 'F' ?
just kidding...put some chimmichurri on it.
WA -
I did that on Saturday, past the F and burned up my gasket. Put new one on it, cooked steak on Monday night and all is right again in Lilburn.

That's not a stretch. Every one of my BGE thermometers after a time started to read silly numbers. I have all Tel-Tru thermometers now. Enjoy them! They are worth the investment. The Naked Whiz

no need to justify the change to me....any new toy is a good toy in the eggin' world.Visit my blog, dedicated to my Big Green Egg Recipies at http://www.bigtsbge.blogspot.com You can also follow my posts on FaceBook under the name Keep On Eggin' or the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Keep-On-Eggin/198049930216241

So calibrate the BGE thermometer..thats what the whole ordeal you did is for...
-
Okay, so I COULD have calibrated the BGE thermometer, but then I wouldn't have had a new $29 gadget to buy!!! At least the numbers are bigger so my old eyes can see it better!

Trust me...I'm right there with you on the eyes thing...but you DO get used to knowing at a glance from a distance pretty much what temp you are at...enjoy the egg and let the little things work themselves out...we aint doin brain surgery.....

Somebody sent me this as a tip but I now turn my thermometer where the number I want to cook at is at the 12 o'clock position. then i can see if from my window and know that it is at the right temp. However, where do i find the tru tel or tel tru thermometer? any excuse to buy a toy for my LGBE is enough for me. I am going to buy a rain fly today because I don't have time to build a roof over my patio right now...

turning the thermometer is a great tip..."ONLY" if the thermometer hole is loose enough..otherwise you would just be un-calibrating it every time you turn it..my large is tight enough that I don't trust doing that...
