Best Way to Unfreeze an Egg?

I'm really surprised that I couldn't find previous posts on this, but I searched with "unfreeze" and couldn't find any.

This should be a timely post for many of us...

Here in NC we not only have cold but *wet*, too. The Eggs routinely get rained on, then freeze. The gaskets freeze shut.

I went out to cook this evening only to find my Egg frozen shut. Pulled out my wife's hair dryer and attacked the gasket area all the way around, but that was taking way too long. Finally decided to drop some fire starter down the dome and light it off, hoping that as it caught the remaining lump the heat of the fire would warm the Egg.

My son (in Canada) told me he poured a large pot of warm - not hot - water over his to open it up. That seems a bit too dangerous to me.

Ideas? How do you unfreeze an Egg?

Drop a lit fire cube in the top or under the fire grate (though the draft door) A warm egg is easier to open.

You did exactly the right thing. Drop a firestick in and try and get it lit that way. Some will also use a MAPP torch though the bottom vent to light remaining lump.

This is a good reminder to always make sure there is "some" lump left in your egg when you shut it down this time of year..

It happened to my small because the ceramic cap was lined with nomex and has a tight fit. I poured hot water to release the cap, then stuffed crumpled newspaper into the dome and lit it like chimney starter, had to repeat to release the dome.

As a preventative measure, I sandwich wax/silicone paper between the gaskets after cool down.

light it from the lower vent and the lump inside should light up and thaw it out (take the vent off obviously)

Mine froze shut last year 2-3 times. This year I covered both my eggs with the BGE covers and I have not had a broblem - yet?
