Finished my table last night when I put the wheels and feet on. I ended up using clear redwood with 4 coats of spar urethane on the frame and 6 coats on more exposed areas such as the top, shelf, and legs.
I followed Naked Wiz plans but ran into a few glitches since he used rough sawn size lumber and I used lumber yard wood. Still, it turned out nice. The granite surfaces are remnants that I got cut down to the size I needed. Cost a total of $40 for the granite. The granite should be a great work surface and sturdy base for the egg.
Now all I have to do is figure out a way to get the egg into the table. Going to be some HEAVY lifting.

You should let the kids go ahead and decorate it with the sidewalk chalk. You know they want to :S

The chalk is a constant source of irritation for old dad around our house. Nothing is safe or sacred to the little guys. So, I am sure the table will be nicely decorated soon. Fortunately, with all the urethane that I put on, just about anything that sticks will wipe right off. -

Hopefully that granite will come out so you have a place to put your next one. Very nice.
-
if there is that much urethane....just burn it off :P
-
Nice work.
I built a similar table, w/o the granite though. Initially, I had some friends help me get the Egg, whole, into the hole.
Later, I wanted to adjust the height of the bottom shelf, so I took all of the innards out, took the top off the Egg and managed getting it in/out, easily, by myself.
It was also a lot easier to get the "feet" well placed, under the whole thing. Make sure to leave some air space bet. the Egg and the granite. You wouldn't want to burn up that table. -
I hear you. I am going to put the feet on the granite. Thanks for the tips on getting the egg into the table. I may have to disassemble.
-
Looks good ! Be sure to still use your green feet between the egg and the granite.
(just read the whole post and saw that you said you would.....good deal. ) -
How heavy can the egg be? Few hundred pounds?
Man up and lift the thing. Make sure to lock your knees and use all the strong muscles in your back. Just grip it and rip it. One fast, swift lift.
You'll be fine.
(uh, please don't do what I say. But I am curious what it weighs, since I'm mad strong and will be lifting mine myself) -
Dave,
Table looks great. Nice job.
In terms of getting the Egg into the table, get a friend to help if at all possible. If you can find some, get a pair of those nylon straps movers use to lift appliances and furniture, and you can pretty easily lift the Egg up, position it in the table, then pull the straps out. If you pull out all the guts first, you'll save a decent amount of weight.
While it is possible to move a large with one person, you don't want to risk dropping it while trying to get it in the table.

It's only 1 band bolt to get the top off. Easy Peazy!
Just get it tight again. -
I want to say an awkward 140 pounds but don't quote me on that. Tim

Normally I would just man up and give it a good heave. However, you have to be kind of careful moving eggs. Don't want to spill the yolk.
I bought mine assembled and moved it where it currently resides. While moving it I caught the spring assembly on my shorts and ripped them. Unfortunately, the shorts were not kevlar and did not protect my leg. I ended up with a nice little scratch. At least I did not mar the egg. It's like I always say, "sacrifice the body and not the toy."
Seriously, I may be looking at taking it apart and doing the installation in baby steps. -
Dave, table looks great. Be sure to put towels or something soft around the hole so as you're lowering you don't scratch it.
Without all the innards it is possible to do it by yourself, but still would recommend a helper.
Good luck,
Bryan -
Great tip on the towels. Mahalo!!!

Great looking table, Dave! Nice work.Knoxville, TN

Take the ring and firebox out. Grate and of course the grid. Open the lid and reach down and use the draft box as your grip. (Wear gloves). Pull up straight and then you can use the other hand to steady and assist as it clears the table.
I have done this on a number of occasions.
If I can do this at age 67 you youngin's should have not trouble.
Good luck -
Dave,

Congrats- table looks great!
the few times I have had to remove my Egg from table, I took all the innards out, took the dome off, stood on the table and lift it up (keep back straight, use legs), set egg on table beside hole.
putting it back-same steps in reverse.
