So has anyone replaced the standard egg temp guage with a Tel-Tru? If so which one? I did see NakedWhiz's review of Tel-Tru.

i use the shorter stem one, i just add ten percent and a little to what ever it reads and thats close enough for me, the low and slows i depend on the maverick when i want a closer read. i just got used to it being off over the yearsfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

fishlessman,
That is true. I got so peed at the bge ones I just leave them out and stick the thermapen in once in a while.

I have 3 of them and they came dead on accurate and stay accurate. I prefer the 5" stem which is only 1" longer than the BGE one. I use a wooden toy wheel to compensate for 1/2" and the other 1/2" is no problem. This way what you read is "it" and you don't have to calculate for the mis-reading of the short stem.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

shoveled all mine into the lake one winter and found i really didnt even need them to cook with, went atleast a year without a gage  something says we need to know what exact temp is in there though :laugh:fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Steve,
Do you stick the Thermapen through the hole of the dome? My small didn't come with a thermometer and I've been thinking of ordering one, but if a termapen works, I'll use that instead. -
Frank I have them in a Lg, Small, and Mini. The Mini is real good as it is short.
I never got a chance to do the Small as I bent it before using and had to order a new one.
I did go the 1000 after several notes from the forum.
The model # on the 5" is LT225R
the mini is just mini.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers. -
Have the 5 inch stem on my large. I will be getting one for my small (if I ever receive the small - sigh).
What RRP said. -
I use the 5" one and put the clip on the outside to keep it from being too deep in the Egg. -RP

Did anyone drill the hole bigger for the large dial versionBone Daddy's Competition BBQ & Catering
-
Not necessary to drill. It fits.
-
After some tinkering/screwing around, I set mine up just like you Randy. They work great.
-
Just ordered 3 (1) with a 5" stem and a range of 150-750 for the large
And (2) with 2" stems and range from 200-1000 for the sm and mini
If they are respected around here, then all is good and buy away. -
GoonSlapper,
Yes,
I'll probably install tell trues eventually, probably when I put gaskets on.

Oh brother. I better get my muck boots on. It's starting to get deep around here. :P
-
Mark,
I did toss my thermos. I read Granpas Grub posts about settings and I'm right on the money most times

try it without the therms for a while, you wont notice the difference much in the cook you only need three temps to cook with for most cooks, low and slows220/300, roasting temps 325/450, searing temps 600/plus. pretty easy to get into those ballparks just by touching the domefukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
-
where did you order them from
-
I could definitely do without thermos on some things, but wouldn't want to be without them on some others unless I wanted to babysit the cook and I hate doing that with the weather we're having. I'd like to shove all this lake effect snow right up somebody's a** right now. haha 22" and counting. Hasn't stopped snowing for 4 days straight. :pinch:
-
Mark,
That's what you get for being on the wrong side of the lake. I will get Tell Tru's but fishlessman is right. I check on and off a few times with the thermapen and I'm good to go. Better than thinking you are at 250* when you are really at 350*

I keep having to snow blow an area out in the back yard so my little Maltese can go out and take a crap! The snow's about a foot over her head. :silly:
