Took my grandchildren to the Ranaissance Festival this Fall. We all filled up on cotton candy, cakes and deep fried corn on the cob. But I seemed to have had just enough room left when we got to the BBQ vendor, to order a BBQ smoked pork shank. First time I ever had one, and it was cooked to perfection. Tasted just like our egg smoked pulled pork with a quality rub, but served as a nice, neat little, two-bone morsal (not pulled). I've never seen them in the grocery store. Anyone in here ever cook them? Anything special about doing them on the egg? The braised recipes I've found on the internet look good too, but thought it might be nice to smoke them for friends on my egg sometime...if I can make them taste as good as they were at the festival. Is the shank the same as the Picnic cut? TIA

A good size shank is hard to find out here, we have to order them from the butcher at the store. We have the buther knoc (not sure of the spelling) or cut into the bone in several places.
Thirdeye has a fantastic write up on them along with some good pictures.
When you get a minute take a look. This will get you wanting to do some cooking.

I have had them a few times in restaurants and have not been able to find them in retail food stores. Have 2 food wholesalers here in central Florida who carry them in 12# boxes. About $48/case. They are frozen and precooped. Should be great on BGE, just heat and serve.

Oh boy! That's it. Wish my Butcher Shop were open today.
Thanks. That is a perfect writeup. I might learn how to cook something new. -
Think he is talking about the smaller appeteaser version.

The shank pictures in his writeup looks pretty close to what I had. Maybe Sysco here in Charlotte has some. The precooked ones would be a great quick fix for guests.
Thanks -
