OT need knife sharpener advice

My Daughter asked me for a knife sharpener for Christmas. I'm thinking of just getting her an old-school knife sharpener but thought I'd check here to see if anyone had any suggestions.

I bought this at bass pro shop. I still need to try it. seems like it will work ok, and the basic kit is not to expensive.

You can take knife sharpening as far as you are comfortable spending money. It really depends on what she is wanting to achieve.

Check out youtube videos on sharpening and you'll see what I mean. Good luck.

there are lots of good sharpening systems and techniques a bit more info would help.. what kind of knives, is she in to sharp knives or does she just want to touch up

Not sure about your budget, but I have a Chef’s Choice Pro 120 Electric Knife Sharpener that I purchased from Williams Sonoma for $159.00.

It works great and anyone can use it. I needed something simple to use but effective and this fit the bill. I learned about it from the Ina Garten on the Food Network.

They also have a version that sells for $119.00.

After trying several different things, I too settled on an Edge Pro Apex. While I really like what it can do, I suspect it is too much for most people.

I and someone I worked with have both used several products from DMT. The "DiamondVee" is similar to the Lansky, and only requires the user to keep the blade vertical. Their "Magna Guide" helps maintain an angle, and will restore badly damaged edges. The fellow I mentioned had to restore his Henckels after he let his mother chip the edge, err, cut up a ham. I would add a ceramic hone to the sharpener just to keep the edge nice and fine.

for what it is worth, I have run the gamut on the sharpening hardware. I used a Lansky for years as well as others. Now the simpliest and most efficent, easy to use unit I have found is the Chef's Mate series of sharpeners. I have a 120 and use it both at home and in my kitchens. Very user friendly and takes only seconds to accomplish the wanted results.

I like my Chef's Choice sharpener. It is easy to use and works well. I have an inexpensive manual sharpener. I have read reviews that say the electric sharpeners are great. However, they are pricey. If your daughter does not mind a bit of work, the manual sharpeners are pretty good and pretty foolproof.

I'd like to thank everybody for their input. I went with the Diamond Vee. It was reasonably priced, had good reviews and my daughter is young and just getting into cooking.
