Just haven't gotten around to buying an adjustable rig, or firebricks, or the bolt and washer setup, etc. Considering aluminum has a melting point of over 1200F, this setup will be fine for cooking chicken thighs at 400, right? Tell me quick, I'm cooking soon! :P

i did that years ago with a indirect setup at 350 for an hour with no problem

my cans were sitting on the platesetter and i noticed nothing amiss

I will take your word for it on the melting point for aluminum. However, be aware of two things. First the aluminum may weaken at below the melting point and not be able to support the weight (think World Trade Center). Second, even though the dome temp is 400 the lump burns much, much hotter and your cans will be pretty close to the lump. I assume you are doing it direct? If you are using a plate setter and can use the legs of the plate setter to buffer the lump from the cans then I think you would not have any problem.

I wouldn't normally consider myself expert enough to respond to this but since you were in a hurry I thought I would throw in my .02 Hopefully, you can get some more educated responses soon.

they were cans from a day around the pool with family friends who have a glass natzi... we even have to mix drinks in cups :( instead of glass mugs.. oh well it is their pool

won't the plastic coating in and outside the can and the paint emit some toxins when heated? Also, the coals get to something like 1400 degrees...just my two cents.

I'm sorry to report we all died from all the aluminum toxicity from both the cans and the disposable aluminum pans. Nah, it was damn good. :laugh:

I like the simplicity - it wasn't the toxicity that concerned me but I was wondering - there must be some kind of barrier to prevent the contents from attacking the can and that and the paint may have tainted the flavour on the first use unless you burnt it off first, glad to hear it didn't. I also remember that as a kid we used to shoot down stacks of drinks cans with an airgun, except if you hit the coke cans the pellet went straight through because they were so much thinner than the rest - I guess all the manufacturers are the same now.

This won't be a problem, will it?
