The dome fell off.
handle?

I'm a big fan of the egg and have been using mine regularly since May.
Lots of steaks and slow cooks. We decided we'd do pizza for a dinner
party.
At full temp the gasket fried, which I expected. What happened next
was not expected.
The dome and was open and I was sliding a pizza on the stone, and
suddenly the 700 degree ceramic fell out of the steel straps and onto
the ground where it cracked and proceeded to burn a hole in my lawn.
Has this happened to anybody? Surely this kind of thing is covered by
warranty. The only thing I can think of that caused this was the retailer
who put it together didn't bolt the straps tight enough, though the bolts
were bent from the tension like they're supposed to be.
This has ruined my party, my lawn, my egg, and is working on my faith
in the product. :(

BUMMER!!! :(

Relax. Sounds like the retailer didn't tighten enough. Maybe you should have tightened after a few cooks. As for the lawn...less to mow for now. Call retailer on Monday and get a new dome.
-
Wow!! That's really bad. For sure someone did something wrong when they assembled it. I would be on the phone with the dealer tomorrow ASAP. They'll definitely get this straightened out for you. Luckily no one was hurt.
Good Luck and let us know what happens. -
having the dome fall off would shake me a bit too. Somehow I have a feeling the dealer will come to the rescue.
As for the lawn, it'll grow back.
Over the years I've made it a habit to check the bolts twice a year early fall and early spring.
My dealer told me to do that when I bought the rig. -
This is why you should always re-tighten after your first few cooks......those bolts should have a very pronounced bend.
Heck, this even happens to some of the old timers on occasion.....I remember one time down in Florida..... -
I've read some things on the forum before about high temps cause the metal bands to expand and loosen. That might be the cause. Hopefully it's covered under your warranty. I've also seen something about some band clips that possibly eliminate the metal expansion issue. Maybe someone who knows more about it will chime in.
-
The clips you refer to are most likely the clips developed by Char-Woody and they were for Primo cookers, not Eggs. I don't know if there is anything like that for other brands. The Naked Whiz

Didn't somebody write a song about it

Doesn't it go?

the one thing i liked about the older bands was the dome pins. these newer bands need to be checked more often, i leave a wrench behind the egg and check it a couple times per year. charwoodys clips would work on the egg, might need longer clinch studs and a slightly different bend but simple enough anyone could makefukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

The thermometer got smashed too, does anybody have a recommendation on a good high temp replacement?
-
Yep.......this feller named Big Bad Gene wrote the following :
Sung to Big John!
That morning near an egg you could see him arrive
He stood three foot six and weighed a buck twenty five
Not very broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to Big John.
Big John
Big Jooooooohn
Big Bad John
Nobody seemed to know where John called home
He just drifted into town and stayed there with Joan
He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy
And if you spoke at all, you just said "Hi" to Big John.
Then came the day in Ocala at the bottom pavilion
When a small egg cracked and men started cryin'
eggers were prayin' and hearts beat fast
Everybody thought that they'd see the wrath of big John
Through the dust and the smoke of busted egg
Bobby –Q could be heard from a far away
that sounded like the crack of a small egg dome
And like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone - Big John
Big John
Big Jooooooohn
Big Bad John
With all of his strength he just shook his head
Then an egger yelled out "Oh my soul”"
You just busted that dome all to hell.
Thankfully that’s the only egg that met its demise that day
So the moral of the story when moving your babe
Be aware of the fate that john met that weekend day
Tighten all of the bolts on the band of an egg
And you will never fell the wrath of gravity! -
no, it is "Big John"
-
Great! Thanks, that's exactly the recommendation I was looking for. I use a DigiQ for all low temp stuff so the high temps are the important ones as far as a dome thermometer.
-
Sorry to hear about that - what a shock it must have been.
I wonder how many of us will be checking our band bolts today?

OUCH :pinch:
Sorry about your loss Handle. That certainly would shake my faith as well. I've never had to contact a dealer or BGE directly regarding a warrenty or replacement part but i've heard nothing but excellent things about them. I hope you're able to get a replacement relatively easily.
I've never understood the concept of tightening "till the bolt bends". To me, that's not a very accurate way of termining if it's tight enough. I'm not looking at my egg, but i'm pretty sure the bolts aren't even grade 5 and don't have lock washers. You'd think there would be a torque value to tighten too. Say 50 ft-lbs. Or maybe having to bands that go across the top of the egg? I dunno. I guess it doesn't happen often enough really to worry about.
Anyways, good luck. let us know how it turns out. -
Does anyone know how much a new lid would cost?
-
Good news! The retailer will replace the dome!
Now I just need a new gasket and thermometer.
I'm sure there's a easy way to secure the top band
so it doesn't fly up and break my nose when I'm
trying to secure the new dome. Big zip ties?
Thanks to all. -
I had a look at it in the light of day and noticed that the bolt on the band holding the dome has straightened out when I remember it was correctly bent from the pressure before!
-
You might be interested in this web page about the 5" vs 2.5" stem models. They both work fine, but the shorter stem model readings will be off 10-15%.
Which TelTru Thermometer? The Naked Whiz -
That was going to be my next question, thanks!
-
with the band in the open position its pretty easy to just remove the springs. once the dome is on have someone hold the lid up and slip the springs back on. ive used a screwdriver to pry/slide them off, and have also used pliers. once you get the new dome on, retighten after a few cooks, then after a month of cooks, then after three months, then twice a year.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

good advice, thanks
-
Handle,
All's well that ends well. It's a good time for all eggheads to think about the possibility of something like this happening on a flammable surface like a deck. Grass is easy to replace...homes aren't.

My XL's bands do loosen at high temps.650 up seems to have the most effect on the bands.

I wonder, if tightening while hot will snap the bands or bolt when the rig cools. I definitely don't want that to happen either.
-
This happen to me today. Pizza at 600 degrees, burped and boom. I feel sick. Not sure what to do. I've had the egg for about 2 years.
