New gasket on the Egg

The old gasket is in bad shape
Going with the Rutland and Permatex Ultra Copper for the adhesive
Found one of the spring bolts lose and fixed
When you take the bands off make sure you attach the retainer bars it makes it a lot easier
The fire box is cracked but its still together and the fire ring is in two peace's still good to go
All cleaned and ready for the new gasket
All back togeather I put some weight in the back were the sean is and well close
later tonight when it's set

Thanks for the pic with the retainer bars in place. Both of ours were preassembled and had to ask for set of retainer bars from dealer

Yes you really need them they should give them to you when you purchase the Egg

The retaining clips are handy. I just removed the springs. They unhook real easy. Looks good Ross. I have not decided to do the Rutland or the contronics(sp?) both seem like good gaskets.This is the greatest signature EVAR!

if by chance the tiny "loose appearing" fibers on your new gasket bother you for one second then take a torch and singe them off. Loco Eng even proved they will disappear with a mere butane type charcoal lighter. It's easiest to do in the daylight - but wait you live in CA where the sun shines all the time and the surf is always up! :laugh:Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

I'm relatively new here, but toasted my top gasket adhesive tonight while cooking pizzas. Is the Rutland gasket preferred over the Nomex? Where do you purchase the Rutland and adhesive? Thanks.

The Rutland at Ace hardware outlet you want the 5/8 and 7-ft length The permatex you get at the autoparts store with the Rutland only put on the bottom leave the top bare

No gasket on the top part of the egg, just the bottom. Are we saying this is a better option than the Nomex?

I toasted the top gasket on my XL on the afternoon of the day I assembled it. I managed for a while with gaps and droopy parts. The third time I tried unsuccessfully to sick the droopy parts back up it just annoyed me too much and I took the top gasket off - wasn't hard. I had planned to replace both top and bottom as I had a spare felt gasket set (for top and bottom) - [part of my purchase inducements] - but while the bottom was scorched round the edges it was still intact. So I thought I 'd try it with just the bottom gasket. I fiddled around with the hinge and bands to get the best possible fit I could between the lid and base with just the bottom gasket in place. And it seemed to work. So I've been egging on with just a bottom gasket of the ordinary felt variety with no apparent problems.
With the spare set, I 'll have two replacements in due course for when I try tandoori chicken! -
Permtex is the only way to go IMHO. I put weigh on my gaskets from the git go.

If you use the Rutland Jon, you put it on the bottom only

Ross, maybe it's just the way the photograph makes it appear, but is the circumference of the "egg hole" in your table top getting ready to catch fire?
It appears to be quite charred.
What kind of air gap do you have, if that's the case?
Though nobody really mentions this in table plans, it is something I worry about.

Good thread, by the way, my gasket is shot on my large, and I'll be picking up a Rutland, myself.
