Geez sometimes things you do remind you of your age, e.g.,:
Tonight I'm listing to the NYY v LAA game on my portable XM radio in my bedroom while I post.
Well so what you say BFD?!
Well it reminds me of when I was a kid listening on a crystal radio (pre-transistor radio days for you kids) in bed hoping Mom wouldn't catch me. Then it was CLEV v NYY (was an Indians fan then). Now I turn on the XM and Petit is gettng knocked around and Vlad drives in the first run, oey vey, adding insult to injury.
Forgive me, less I digress, but at times I wonder what my Gramdmother thought of all she had seen when she passed at 103 years old.

I had a moment somewhat similar this evening. I have three small children (twins that are almost 3 and a 3 month old), and this evening when I got home from work my kids were in the driveway playing with the big wheels I put together yesterday. The joy on their faces as they were making laps in our driveway reminded me of how much fun I had on my own big wheel so many years ago.
Good memories, both new ones being made and old ones being recalled. -

Oh... I never had a big wheel we called them tricycles.  I must stop now else this will go on forever - I'm that old and glad of it.
Looking back ain't so bad. -
MAN!I know what u mean.My Favorite Grandmother was 18 years old when she saw her first car!!!Born in January,1899.ME, DECEMBER ,1962!

Our big wheels were tricycles with the front wheel and handle bar reversed in the yoke. For some reason we could never get the seat to reverse, that sure was hard on the butt.

Hoss was born in Dec. 1962? Wow. I was in the 3rd grade in Macon Ga. Cynthia H. Weir elementary school.

Crystal radio, that I made as a Boy Scout project, and copper wire strung / hung on trees laid out in a huge “L” on two sides of the back yard for an antenna. (Where is the emoticon for the thinning hair and the scruffy beard...Both GRAY)
The old kit radio did work pretty well, but not as good as the Lloyd’s Transistor I got a year or two later. Not to mention, Dad was very skeptical about my antenna set up and lightning :woohoo:
As for Mom…I actually feel asleep many nights listening to the radio, she was OK with it. -
That reminds me of listening to Mystery Theatre on the radio. Us girls in bed, lights out. Us hoping not to get caught.Molly

I'm not gona tell ya how old I was or what grade I was in, ya'll probably figured it out anyway with my brain freeze ramblin's on as such.

i bet she'd have been less impressed with the XM radio than the fact that you could communicate with a group of people all round the world from the comfort of your bed.

I've told this story before but I think now would be a good time to tell it again.
In an earlier life my family owned a general store in a small remote village in Louisiana on the Ouachita River. The time frame is late 40's. There was no TV or transister radio's and there was only one telephone (crank style) in town at the lumber yard. It was connected to the firetower, which in turn was connected to the telephone office about 30 miles away. For anyone to make or receive a call it became a special event for everyone in town. But that's another story...
Mr. John lived 'up river' a few miles. There was no electricity and roads were mearly trails through the woods to the main highway. It was much easier for him to come to town in a boat. He didn't come to town very often.
One day he showed up carrying a dry cell radio battery. The thing was over a foot long, eight inches high and four inches thick. Very heavy. It was for one of those huge radio's that you see in Norman Rockwell paintings.
People didn't listen to the radio very much to conserve battery power but they did listen to the news and weather reports.
Anyway, he handed it to my Dad with a simple, "Here..."
My Dad said, "Is something wrong with it Mr. John? You just bought it a coupla months ago?"
Mr. John said, "It's gone to lying."
And that's a true story...

I got jipped. Big Wheels came out when I was 10 pounds past the recommended weight :-(
So I got to watch my younger friends spinning down Church Field Lane where I grew up.
That really hurt. Thankfully I had my banana seat Sting Ray to ease the pain.
Cheers!

Arghhhh. What a time for NYY to go into a mini slump and be playing LAA! I stayed up till 1AM listening to the game hoping for an 8th and/or 9th inning comeback - well it didn't but BOS lost to KC - gotta find the rainbow in it all.
-
SC,
Thanks for sharing! -
I used to listen to the Washington Senators under the blanket, lol! I had a transistor, so I must have been a modern kid, eh?The Naked Whiz

Hey Whiz,
Maybe but only by a couple of years at most, I'm mean it's the Senators you listened to. -
Funny

ouch, man.
no like my original response? hahaha
boy, that's pretty telling. going line by line to respond to everyone and skipping stike. >sniff<
>jagweed goes upstairs to cry into cheerios< -
I was thinking about that very same thing the other day. I got a radio for my room in 1963. I was allowed to listen to the games as long as I was doing or had completed my homework. The 60's were a great time for baseball in St Louis. Three world series with wins over the Red Sox and Yankees. But the most special part was having Harry Caray and Jack Buck as the radio broadcast team.
-
I remember well. Thanks for the post.
-
-
Wow....I thought your response told it all very well. One each happy face deposited to your post. I better check down the thread a little farther.
-
Yep, mine was born in 1897 - think about all they witnessed OMGoodness.
-
I already read this on the Off topic Forum.
It is a good idea anyway  -
now you're just saying that. stoppit. you can't make it better. anyway, i was looking forward to a good cry.
