First unenjoyable cook!

Had the family(s) over yesterday to celebrate my oldest daughters birthday. We decided to keep it simple and have burgers, dogs & brats plus a million side dishes. I fired up the egg early so I could roast some of the hot peppers from my garden and then some fresh eggplant circles, which worked out great. Then I fired up the gasser to roast some potatoes, one batch with evoo, garlic & rosemary, the other with garlic, butter & frank's hot sauce. Once the potatoes were almost done, I started cooking the burgers. We all like them med rare to med. The egg was fired up nicely, but my God, the backs of my fingers all got burnt. Lifting and closing the lid (no flashback), using the flipper on the burgers (bbq tool, not normal kitchen flipper), it was torture! Probably too many burgers at once, since they pretty much covered the grate, but it was a painful cook.

70chevelle,
This is an experience that I have gone thru also. Since that time, when I grill up more than 4 burgers at once, I utilize my raised grid. It takes the cooking level up to the felt line and reduces how far into the Egg you actually have to go to flip.
AND...Get yourself some good gloves for times like the one stated. No meal should be unenjoyable to cook. -
What a dummy I am!!! I have a nice set of thin welding gloves I use to take hot items from the grill, but never even thought of putting them on yesterday when I was cooking. What a maroon! Next burger cook will be enjoyable!

if it wasnot flashback, its more likely steam. steam burns are worse, watchout for dutch oven cooking and turkey cooks where there is even more steam, one quick burst with those cooks can ruin your dayfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
-
Easy solution = let everybody cook their own burger
-
Hamburgers and sausage seem to produce a lot of steam. That is about the only time I use my gloves unless removing a hot plate setter.
-
Fish,
Thanks for the heads up. Haven't considered that one. -
P'Smoker,
Ditto my post to Fishlessman. -
steam burned blisters on tday is not good, been there, wear gloves if there is heavy moisture involvedfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Sounds like you had the lump pretty high in the egg. Any cook less than about 4 hours of cook time I only load the large or medium to just above the air holes in the fire box.
I cook burgers direct on the top of a Adjustable Rig, dome 350°-400°. I have never had to resort to using gloves when cooking the burgers unless there was a lot of flair up from the drippings. If there is flare up I do use cotton garden gloves.

I've burnt hair off my arms quite a few times and even got my eye lashes once. That really opened my eyes!
Now a glove is standard equipment. I also don't put as much lump in for general grilling. -
I've lost hair from flash backs. But for flare ups not less than I used to get on the gasser.

Chevelle...Egg and Learn!! Here is some risotto on the grill...."cave glove" style....
Not exactly "dainty" or "sexy", but no sore hands either. And trust me, this is a cook I ONLY did for a throwdown!! I will NOT duplicate this effort unless I am starving to death!! :woohoo:
The glove is a STAPLE next to our egg.....especially for sear/hot cooks. As I said earlier....Egg and Learn!!! Keep Eggin'!!!! -
My brother had a 67 Chevelle with a 396.
