New Raised Grid...

Finally found some hardware to put together the raised grid for the medium. :woohoo: This is a winner - thanks JLockhart29 and the gang of hardware posters.

First cook is tonight's dinner: a couple of Hi Mt BBB cured loin chops, garlic spinach, asparagus and shrooms.

I'm invoking the "don't ask don't tell" policy wrt hardware used on the rig.

Hey NoVA Bill,
The new rig looks great. Ive been wanting to do a similar setup for my XL. Just one question, are the bolts actually attached to the bottom grate or are the washers just sitting on the bottom grate so you can just lift off the raised grid legs and all?

I checked with one of the welders in the shop after I made mine, and he said that I could use anything the local hardware store had because it wouldn't get hot enough be dangerous. But he did tell me I might want to run them through the dish washer before I used them because some have oils on them from the manufacturing process.

Gator,

I used 4 inch bolts, seems to be enough room for me on the medium, at least after the first cook. Need to do some ribs to complete the test drive.

I used carriage bolts, 3/8-16 x 5, 3/8 -16 hex nuts and 3/8 x 1 1/2 fender washers. The fasteners were all stainless steel. You can use shorter bolts. With the 5" bolts there are 2" from the Gasket Level. So the Rigged Grid is sitting on the original grid at the Fire Ring Level.

I heard that stainless steel could be dangerous exposed to high heat so that's why I asked the shop welder. FWIW

I would say the hardware at the bottom of the rig is certainly exposed to some fairly high heat in the picture, even with the raised lower grid. The potential for much higher heat is always present.

I have Stainless Steel Grids on my Gas Grill. Gas Grill has been at high temps. If anything think of what they use to Zinc Plate fasteners. I guess it depends on how you want to look at the issue.

Sounds good Bill, I will be looking forward to your post. I got the rack for my medium made so I can do jerky and have had a bad cold so have not had the egg running much. Maybe I can get jerky made this weekend.

Just happened once again to catch your post b4 bed at 5:00am! :blink: Great job on the grill and glad you used the three leg version. As stable as the 4 and gives more room on the bottom. A good spray on all sides from all angles followed by a soak while eating will make clean up a breeze.

Looks good - I know you say don't ask don't tell but (without wishing to invoke ghost of Stike etc.) that looks to me like a Weber charcoal grate ? what is the diameter you used - I can actually get weber char grates here in the Uk so may copy.

This doesn't answer your question, but for a large you can use an 18" Weber replacement grid.
