One Burnt Table !!

Here's a three photos of the 11 year old table we're replacing.

The Large Egg sat up on its feet. The table was never finished and the wood was quite dry.

I had only noticed smoke from the underside of the Egg a couple of months ago.

The new table is going to have a 1" piece of Brazilian slate on Egg feet and I'll have Egg feet under the Egg as well so there will be to spaces for airflow.

We're damned lucky the deck and the house didn't catch fire.

Be careful and check once in a while just to make sure nothing is scorched or burned. You may not notice the smoke. We were lucky.

This thread should have flashing lights around it.

Too many eggs sitting on a paver and calling it good.

I caught mine by luck before it got as bad as yours. Glad you got it in time. My pics are on the table section. Never can be too careful Carey, thanks for sharing.

These pictures send chills!! We lost our home to a fire in Feb 08, not due to BGE. Still just the thought of what could have happened brings back all of the feelings. Mike

I caught mine smoking once and it almost got like that. I put a concrete paver stone underneath it and have not had problems since.

I'm a retired fireman and chimney sweep. I shudder every time someone posts a pic of their egg setting on wood and the wood surround is less than an inch away on the table. Wood exposed to heat over time goes through a process called pyrolysis. The ignition temperature of wood is around 451 degrees F. Pyrolysis can lower the ignition temperature of wood to 200 degrees or less.

Here's a link to Wilecoyote's work on tables that suffer such damage: What To Place Under Your Egg The design of my table with the slate paver has almost no wood beneath the egg and I've never had a problem with wood scorching underneath the cooker. But I've busted a couple of sheets of slate due to the heat. I now just leave the busted piece in place since a new one will only bust again.
