I think I read a post that 2.4 people per pound of butt was about right. I don't recall if it was pre or post cook. I'm cooking for 50. Does 20 to 24 lbs (pre cook) sound about right?

I think Celtic Wolf has this down. My opinion, go long because left over PB is always good!

As a rough estimate, number of people times 2 for the raw butt weight. You generally lose 40% butt weight during the cook and that is were the 2.4 comes in. Using 2 should provide a little extra.

50 people / 4 servings per pound = 15.5 pounds of cooked product. You will want 26.5+ pounds of Raw product.
Haven't calculated for such a small number in quite a while. :woohoo: -

I told you Celtic Wolf would hook you up. He helped me out this past spring with a big cook. Worked out great! -
I just did a butt cook for 50 for a rehersal dinner. I told my aunt to get 3 butts she bought 3 2packs. There would have been plenty with 3 8-9 pounders. However I did another cook for 50 young sailors and 4 just was enough. Celtic's numbers are pretty much right on. I figured that the 19-22 year olds would put away more grub so I cooked an extra just in case, glad I did.

I got this down to 100 people per large egg.
I almost told him a half an egg's worth :woohoo: -
Thanks to all for the input. Saved me from being a little short

Always better to have too much than not enough. It freezes great.

Make it easy on yourself. Divide the number of people eating by 2.4.
If you want to match CW's numbers then take the number of people and divide by 1.6.
Don't fuss with all the extra calculations.
