Gasket question

I have had my egg 8 months now and cook on it all the time. Higher temp cooks during the week and low and slow on the weekends. My gasket is pretty crusty in the middle and I noticed a little smoke coming out of the back during a Trex dwell on Saturday. I haven't noticed any trouble maintaining temps yet. Should I wait to replace until I need to? I have heard how some guys keep cooking even without a gasket b/c they can maintain temps. Thoughts?
