i was heating up my large egg the other day. it was heating up for about 20-25 min with bottom vent all the way open and daisy wheel off of the top. i noticed the temp was at about 250 and had been stagnant there for about 5-7 min--not moving. i opened the lid and--BAM!!--major flashback. did the whole singing of the hairs on the arm thing. the egg then climbed to about 550 over the next 30 secs. any ideas? maybe the bottom grate was plugged and blew the plug during the flashback? i have been very careful (with this one noteable exception) about flashbacks but this one totally caught me by surprise.

The "BAM" is a result of not enough oxygen flowing through the bottom vent. The air vents in the fire grate and or fire box were in some way blocked. And, or the lump in the firebox was blocking air flow.
When there is a stall a wiggle rod usually will correct the problem.

I'll go with that, a fire going but choked off of air flow, unburned gasses builds up and when the lid is opened a rush of fresh air goes in and WOOOOMMMMPPPPP!

I allways thought it was dust. Bottom of the bag or new bag that had beed roughed up and lots of dust created.

Are you thinking the dust itself is explosive/highly flammable?

I can well understand that Bob, however I am not sure how .... no that question will leave me wide open.

Coal fire generating plants grind the coal into a fine dust and inject it into the combustion chamber. Very similar to a gasoline mist. Simple flour can be extremely explosive under the right conditions.
