I am looking for the killer RUB but the lists I find are endless. Is the a poll or a consensus somewhere that would give me a top 10 rubs to use. I have tried several including the store rubs.

I have loved making my own... and was convinced I was making the best... until I tried Dizzy Dust. Seriously nothing compares to their original. I used the course grind for larger cooks like pulled pork... You can't go wrong

It would be mighty hard to beat Dizzy Pig's selection of rubs...
Thanks, Chris -
There are millions of recipes about there.
Start with a basic rub.
Critique it.
And then it is a matter of trial and error finding what is "perfect" for you.
Here is the rub that made stop using marinades and sauces.
Basic Rub
1 ½ tablespoon kosher salt
2 tablespoon black pepper
2 tablespoon sweet paprika
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon oregano leaves
2 teaspoon ground cumin
Rubs are personal creations. There is no perfect rub.
Some people prefer no salt or no sugar.
Others want a lot of heat.
The following are popular in lots of rubs
brown sugar
chili powder
cayenne pepper
dried thyme
ground nutmeg
Plus dozens of other spices -
We are not a board of sheep here, but you'll find that Dizzy Pig has a wide array of rubs to suit many tastes. They are fresh, and quite reasonably priced. Sure it's fun to make some but DP are hard to beat!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

Dizzy Pig

I can't say I have a favorite but it depends on what I am cooking. I love the Dizzy Pig seasons but I use several others like Bad Byrons, Tony Chachere's, Hebert's, Richards and a few more as well as my own. It depends on what taste I am looking for.

zipur74,
We don't really have polls here. Too bad.

DP rubs are good stuff, but I find that there's a definite "theme" to their taste. So I like to branch out to get different flavors. A couple of other good ones:
* John Henry Pecan - superb on pork, especially ribs
* Uncle Bob's Rib Rub - very good on, well, ribs -
I am new to egging, with my first egg received last weekend - my brother brought it to me from the NH eggfest. He has been egging for a while and suggested that I order the full supply of Dizzy Pig - he likes some more than others, but has tried them all and likes them. The full selection is a bit pricey ($90'some with s/h) but I figure it'll last a while. I got it in the mail today and look forward to trying it all.

Any of the 3 rubs from SZEGED. Steak, Chicken, or Pork they are all get the coveted DrZ Kickass Award! :P
But you are right. There are many that are great. I have not tried any of the DP yet but I will get there eventually. :blink:This is the greatest signature EVAR! -
some of John Henry's are good

They got everything you will ever want..didn't read the other replies..so I may be repeating others..

As you can tell there are many rubs to choose from.
I got lucky and found this recipe and have been modifying it ever since - my family likes my modified rub and it does very well on everything:

I cook on the egg often so I use a good bit of the rub and buying the ingrediants at Costco helps me keep the cost down plus I get to tweek the recipe when someone in the family says " Dad, kick it up a notch".
Good luck, -
What variations have you found?? Coffee ground fine is one I like Richard
-
I've varried some of the quantities to my family's tastes. I have not added to the no. of ingrediant though. As you may know the original Pixie Dust is highly flamable
I'll post the modified quantities if you're intersted - no major science just a little hit or miss. -
Denny Mike's Rubs are awesome i would highly recommend them!!!!

There are approximately 5383 rubs available. You need to start trying them all and decided which one you like best. Let us know!
