BBQ Guru Meat Probe Question

I've done a search but came up with nothing that works. So... here's the question/problem.

My BBQ Guru is showing +5 on the meat side, an indication that the meat is 5 degrees over my desired temperature mark. It won't come off that number in spite of the meat just going on the Egg.

I've moved the probe, unplugged the power, re-booted the Guru, reinstalled the connections and called it names but it still won't budge from the +5 mark.

I'm now thinking maybe the probe has gone bad, or worse, the Guru has gone bad.

Any suggestions?

Swap the probes in the Guru and see if you get a reading. Mike

Can't swap the probes. The wires are harnessed and plug into a single receiver.

Hi Spring Chicken, it's been awhile. I had a problem recently and found I had fried the wire on the temp probe. I got a replacement (my second) and they sent me one where the probe wires are encased in stainless or something. No problems if the probe happens to touch the grill (at reasonable temps).

Yea, I'm thinking I've got a bad wire or probe, although I haven't had it in a high-temperature situation. Could be it just decided to conk out.

Spring "At A Loss For Solutions To A Simple Problem" Chicken, looks like you have to revert to the old method of cooking for the weekend. Lawn chair, shade tree, beer cooler (rum and coke will work) and set back and watch the egg cook. Come to think of it, that’s not all bad. Good luck fixing the probe.

Here's a link to the new probes. Expensive, but they will last a lot longer. I burnt the old style probe while cooking at about 300 degrees. It touched the grill and that fried it.

Hey... I figured you would be off in the distance this weekend. If you are like us, staying home is the pleasure.

Dudley Doright Guru is still monitoring the Egg, just not reading the meat temperature. That means I will have to use my remote or my Polder or my Thermapen to check for doneness during the wee hours. Not so bad.

Hang in there. You will catch up with yourself one of these days.

Are the probes on the guru hard wired into the unit?

Not hard-wired... It plugs in. A single plug for both the grid temperature probe and the meat temperature probe. Here's the details.

Same thing happened to me awhile back. I just kept messin with it. Completly unplugged it then unplugged the wire to the unit and plugged it back in an it worked and has been every since

Well that idea is shot to heck!!!

However, 61chev might have a thought there. You could also get some 91% alcohol and clean the connection on the probes and using a swab clean the inside of the connection on the guru.

When your cook is over you might try putting the probe assembly into the freezer for a while then back out into the warm air.

These might end up being keep you busy projects but who knows, something might work out.
