Hey all,
I picked up my egg on Tuesday. Stopped off at the store and grabbed a few items for my first cook. I couldnt wait! I had some trouble with initial temps, I think it was from not using enough lump. The food was OK, the cornbread was fantastic. So instead of getting discouraged I made a second attempt last night. Changed the amount of lump I started with and It made all the difference in the world. I am now an EGGHEAD!!!. After dinner I whipped up some homemade blueberry muffins and my whole neighborhood smelled like them. I loved it.
Here are my questions. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
1. I bought a plate setter and cooked the chickens right on it. Is that ok? I wanted the chickens on the grill above the plate setter, but with the plate setter in I couldnt close the lid.
2. I have the XL and was wondering if I needed the plate setter for the large for it to sit lower.
Thanks in advance!

I'm just guessing here, but if you couldn't close the lid with the chicken on the grid, you must be doing beer can chicken or some other stand up devise. -RP

welcome to the forum. Are you saying you cooked the chicken directly on the plate setter? I think most folks wouldn't do this. If you put the plate setter in feet up, then place the grid on the feet, chicken on the grid, the lid should close. Most folks put tin foil on the plate setter or use a drip pan to keep the grease off.

Do you have a large Egg and XL platesetter? If so, you need to exchange it for the large platesetter.

I could not close the lid when I put the grate on top of the plate setter. No food was on at that time.

I'll wager $100 on old xl style with new xl platesetter.www.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

I'll take 3 cents of that action!

I put the chicken right on the plate setter. I was under the gun. I tried it directly on the grill, but chicken was burning. So in haste I threw in the plate setter. I am thinking that tjv is correct. I think I got the wrong plate setter.
-
did you have the plate setter upside down?
-
Tried it both ways.

Why did you use the platesetter to cook chicken anyway. I always cook chicken direct on my XL. Temp should be around 350. Takes between 45 mins and an hour.
-
Yep, that'll do it. No better chicken. I've heard it soooo many times in the short 4 months I've been Eggin.

It sounds like you have the wrong plate setter for your egg.

Quetioner....There is something very basic we are missing here..... Set up, from the bottom up:
Firebox (with your lump in it)
Fire-ring
Then....Platesetter, Legs UP....
Then...Grid on top of the place setter Legs.
Try this order, and take some pics if this doesn't work. This isn't making sense. I do not believe the new design of the XL would impact the components needed.
Let us know!

It is my understanding that they have a new plate setter for the XL that has longer legs than the old setter, but it is supposed to be used with the new firebox, which is shorter. An old style firebox with the new style plate setter may be too tall when used together. At least that is my guess what is going on here.

That was exactly it. I spoke with customer service yesterday and I have the new plate setter and the old fire ring. They are sending me out a new fire ring free of charge. That is solid customer service, they now have a customer for life.
I have egged now everyday since I have got it. It is the best. Thanks all for your responses. -
