after 5 cooks 3 low & slow and the last 2 high heat (600). My gasket is coming off on the top and bottom in a small section. My question is can you replace only the damage section or do you have to do the whole thing?
Any other suggests would be helpful
Thanks all!
PS I have an x-large and my local dealer installed and delivered the BGE for an additional fee. I plan to call them in the morning.

There several hundred threads on this subject that are hard to navigate.

OK, point made.
Go be a **** somewhere else. -
But navigate we do!!!

Still bitchin" I see.
Why not leave us alone and go watch TV? -
Im not happy either but i resloved the problem and am trying to move on, but after spending near $1000 i expected it to last at least a few months.
-
You're not alone. After waiting a month to buy my egg I smoked the gasket on the maiden voyage. I didn't have the right starters to get my lump charcoal going so I used some fluid, which caused a huge flame up and when I saw the gasket was being singed, I slammed the lid shut. Then the gasket melted together and I had to pry it open. Pretty weak engineering! Oh well - the steaks are done and I survived without burning the house down. I intend to contact BGE and see what they'll do for me.
-
Yup, lighter fluid causing a large flame up will toast a felt gasket every time.
Also, improper use of alcohol as a starting method will cause problems. Too much oil on the napkin/oil method will cause problems as will using a weed burner and letting that intense heat get close to the gasket. Propane or MAPP can sometimes create too much flame.
The gasket is not intended to be fire proof.
There is a little bit of personal responsibility and caution necessary. "Pretty weak engineering" wasn't the cause of this gasket failure. It was improper use.
I would recommend to everyone not to "slam" any egg shut.
I am not sure about Nomex but any open flame hitting the felt gasket/adhesive will have a propensity to make it fail.
Contact your dealer and or BGE and see if they will help you out.

GrillDaddy,
If you had a partial failure I would have the entire gasket, top & bottom replaced with Nomex. Make sure the dealer checks the alignment again also.

Here, this should help folks with navagating a few of the gasket threads.
Most questions should have been discussed and I believe even BGE Service has posted a request that if someone is/has experienced a problem to telephone BGE Service to get the problem resolved.

I have seen examples where people replace sections of a gasket, so there is no harm in trying, but I would consider it a short term patch rather than a long term repair.
Go for the new Nomex(R) gasket.
For most cooks, you will do fine without the gasket, so Egg on. -
Hello, Grandpa. I agree with you except before you jump down my throat you ought to consider: I am an average person - not an experienced griller or smoker. I have owned a BBQ in the past, but not one like this. The store I bought my BGE at did not have any of the fire-making accessories. Nor did Home Depot - just natural lump charcoal. So after a half hour of trying to light the damn lump charcoal with matches and paper, I gave up and went to 7-11 for some fluid. I think this reaction is pretty normal. Nowhere in the manual does it say "DO NOT USE FLUID", and if it is - it's not where it should be, i.e. in big bold letters on the first page. To ruin an expensive investment on the first try doing something that's not exactly "irresponsible" is not a good consumer experience. The good news is I didn't crack or chip the egg, and I can replace the gasket. OH, and the steaks I made were seriously the best damn steaks either my girlfriend or I had ever had in our lives! I love my BGE, it was just a rough start.

Page 103, Appendix, 4:
Do I need starter fluid to light the Big Green Egg? Do not use lighter fluid.
Big Green Egg Warranty, Paragraph 3:
The pouring of liquids on your grill flame will void the warranty. Starter lighter fluid is not to be used to start the fire inside the Big Green Egg.
Did you actually read the manual? -
Hell's bell's, use your screen name. Geeeze...

lajollaloco,
Didn't mean to sound like I was jumping on you, however, I understand your thinking that with the temperament of all the posts.
As you can see in the post above from 'The Manual' there evidently a comment about lighter fluid, but I am not surprised it wasn't seen.
For me when talking about gaskets there are now three scenarios. There is the old felt gaskets which usually only failed with extreme high heat or exposure to flame/flashback. There is the new Nomex and there is the newer felt gaskets which have a seem to a lot of of adhesive failure.
I don't have anything to back this up but it is my opinion that BGE sources out the gasket and adhesive. It seems like they got a shipment of gaskets with bad adhesive for whatever reason. Those got installed sent through the distribution system and out to the customers.
It is understandable, that when a gasket fails early on into the use the users who know of the forum will come on ask for help and some will just ****.
For the folk that have had eggs for a while have either decided to not use a gasket, use a off BGE brand gasket, make their own gasket or just use whatever is left of their old felt gasket.
There has been so many posts with the new felt gasket problem and so many answers given to those who ask for help that it is getting old hat for many. For the new person it is new to them. Added to that some just come on and **** and that is when the hair gets raised and, well, you have read the responses.
I don't think the egg is engineered badly, the gasket is something that is being worked on by BGE and the current problems seem to be slowing down and being fixed by BGE. So I will speak up when someone is bashing the 'engineering' rather than possibly admit it might be at least partly user fault.
I got my first egg 2 years ago with the old felt gasket. (I now have 4). On my first cook I burned the gasket out within 2 hours of unloading it from the car. The gasket failure was entirely my fault, flashback while trying to T-Rex a steak. I wanted to go nuclear heat as T-Rexing was talked about a lot on the forum at that time.
My medium had real problems and all-in-all I have replaced 8 gaskets (all old felt). Some of the problems were the eggs' fault and some of the failures were my fault. I do understand gasket problems and have found a few ways to avoid those problems. My first gasket cleaning/replacement on the large took about 4 to 5 hours, now it takes about 15 minutes to clean and 20 minutes to replace (using felt). Fairly easy all-in-all.
I also think it takes some time to learn how to use the egg without putting stress on the gasket area, however, with the Nomex it appears the problem is resolved. I have only heard second hand one nomex gasket failure.
I am more than happy to help anyone if asked and at the same time I will 'defend' the eggs. [the medium I am a bit pissed at] but that is another story]. The eggs are great. BTW, my first large cost me $1,500 the only extra was a plate setter and mates (no discounts up this way) and even with the gasket problem to me it was worth it and still is. Of course, I would like to have gotten the fest price...

I thought it said that too but was too lazy to get the manual out and check.
I watched the video but I don't think I read the manual when I first fired up the egg.
GG -
shoot i have never seen the video!!
when i got my egg i had a dvd and the video was vcr and i afraid to ask those who i knew that had a vcr if i could use it (mainly because the people i knew that had one only used it for p0rn) and i did not want to touch it)
by the time i got a dvd i already knew how to use the egg.... when i got my small i gave the dvd to a friend who eventually bought a egg
i had to learn how to use the egg with the manual only... i put it on the back of my kamode and read it everytime  so i don't read it often anymore
hope all is well in the high desert!!
BTW it is thermApen :pinch:happy eggin

Why are you pissed at the medium? I am having one delivered in the next week. Never used a BGE before and decided on a medium. Based on cost and family size. any tips would be greatly appreciated.
klf -
Me and the medium don't get along too well. I think it is just something with mine.
Try to make sure you get the 'new/larger' fire ring and I think the fire box was redesigned also, but not sure on the fire box.
My Medium had a good 2" gap in the back of the fire ring and egg wall which seems to be causing me some problems at my altitude.
Look up some of Broc's posts he uses the heck out of his medium and cooks for a lot of people on his. Groups as big as 150 at a time.

Grandpas Grub - thanks so much for all the information. That is what this forum is supposed to be all about. I will check into the new Nomex(R) gasket.
-
I recently replaced my gasket with the new nomex model, using 3M Super 77 adhesive. Several cooks later, no problems at all, even after a near disaster.
Preparing to do a pizza, I left the Egg with the daisy wheel off and the damper wide open, to get it started. The phone rang and I spent the next 45 minutes assisting a business client. When I returned to the egg, the thermometer was PEGGED! I immediately closed the damper and put the closed daisy wheel in place. The Egg puffed a few times... (bringing to mind the potential balistics of flying ceramics)... but it quieted down. After a couple of hours it cooled to about 500f, so I opened it to see what damage I had done. The gasket was just fine! So, I popped in the pizza and had a late dinner.
Hope this helps!
