Blue Ridge Smoke
Posts: 100
I am getting excited. After eyeing the Big Green Egg for years, I am finally close to getting one this winter. My propane grill has died after 6 years of life, and my electric smoker has seen better days. So, I’ve been visiting my local dealership, and I’m building a gift-list for my wife & family in honor of my birthday next month.
So, here’s what I’ve got on my list:
[ul]Large Big Green Egg
Large Nest
Large side shelves
Cast Iron Grid
Plate Sitter
Pizza Stone
Grill Gripper Tool[/ul]
I want to smoke (turkeys and pulled pork), sear steaks, and grill dawgs & burgers. My wife loves pizza, so I’m using that to my advantage here.
I’ve seen guys light these things with a propane torch? Good or bad idea? (Flame torches can’t be all bad, can they?)
What am I missing from the list? More importantly, how do I seal the deal with my wife??

Welcome to the club.It looks like you've made a pretty good wish list there. Now go tell wifey that you'll be able to make the best meals ever, and that you've been ruining meat all these years I would also recommend a Thermopen(instant read meat thermo),they are great :woohoo: BTW:Torches are fun and fast(just remember to wear safety goggles)
-
Doug,
Do you have any problems with the Thermopen making holes in the meat allowing the juices to leak out. Like the old fork-type thermometers do? -
Not at all Clark. The Thermopen has such a tiny probe, that you can barely notice the hole in the meat. It's the best eggcessery that I have :woohoo:

thermopen is a must

welcome -
Good idea. I have a couple $15 probes for now. I gotta have something on my Valentine's Day list!!!

Gotta agree with the thermopen
-
That was my biggest concern. Definitely on my list now!
Birthday next month .... :woohoo: -
* Thermapen
* ThirdHand grid lifter by ThirdEye (much better than the grill gripper)
* Ash tool can be handy if you don't have a shop-vac or other tools to clean out the egg.
* MAPP torch and a fire extinguisher (fastest way to light the egg, but mind the sparks!)
* Probe thermometer for longer cooks (like the Maverick ET-73, Polder, etc.)
As far as sealing the deal... I don't know. It took me about 2 years after learning about the Egg to finally get to the point of making the investment. I kick myself every time I light it up (which is at least 4 times a week) for not getting it 2 years ago.
Plus -- you'll save a lot of money NOT going out to eat. You won't want to after you've tasted your food! -
The deal sealer for me is now i got 2-3 meals a week. Also my kids try a lot more foods even veggys.

Those $15 thermometers are ok, but the Thermopen is the best - don't scrimp on this and don't by any look-a-likes. Get ONLY the Thermopen if you are going to get this quality of a thermometer.
I used the egg for quite a while and bought a lot of $15 thermometers trying to avoid spending the money for a Thermopen.
The Thermopen is one of the best accessories I could have got for the egg and more importantly the biggest to the texture, flavor of my cooking (on and off the egg).
For a grid lifter look at thirdeye's Third Hand. Not very expensive and it is a great grid lift.
Thirdeye's site has a lot of great recipeis/how too's also.

Here is the link for the thirdhand, for some reason I can't connect right now. Not sure if it is me or the site.

The BGE V-Rack and Drip pan are a must have to the standard collection of goodies. So many uses....Kent Madison MS

If the nest is not included in the Egg price you don't have to have one.
Lots of folks build tables. Mine have always been on the ground.
As far as the wife. The Egg in use in the picture was purchased in 1998. We had just bought our first house. She balked at the price so we spent twice as much! I got the Egg and she got a foo foo chair.
