I'm wondering how others prefer to light their eggs.
I got some starters, but have eye on an electric.

I just use the weber parafin cubes. sometimes when it is windy they are a pain to light, but they usually get her going well. I saw someone post the other day about about 10 minutes after you light the starter, to stir up the lit lump to mix it with the unlit lump. I did that on my 17 hour brisket cook and it worked awesome.
I also have some BGE starters I will use when the webers run out. -
Propane plumbers torch, cheap and easy.
-
I have gone to a chimney starter and rubbing alcohol (91%). I fill chimney up full of new lump, then I measure 1 shot (1oz) of alcohol and pour that in center of lump, then I light that after about a 20 second wait. After about 10-15 mins, fire in the chimney is glowing hot, I pour all of that over lump in my XL or LGE, and in 10 minutes my fire is up to temp and cruising along just fine.

Paper towel lightly soaked with vegetable (or other cheap) oil.

I use a little oil on a couple of paper towels. Didn’t like doing it that way when first tried but now it’s the only method I use. One trick, have an extra towel to clean your hands after pouring the oil on the first two. Just toss extra towel on lump and it will help light your fire. PopsicleWillis Tx.

Usually use the propane torch, but like chimney with oil soaked paper towel.

MAPP gas is the way to go...light 3 or 4 areas and in 5 minutes you are up and running...
clean and simple...one can of gas will last about 6 months using the egg 3 or 4 times a week.
PS, It also works in the home fireplace!Bone Daddy's Competition BBQ & Catering -
Been using electric for 2 years, but usually "toast one" every 2-3 months.
Considering getting a MAPP torch. -

I got a box of 100 starters like these Grate Chef fire starters (but a lot cheaper)
Throw in a couple, light with a match and that's it, fire.
When they run out, I'll probably switch to oil soaked paper towels. -
Interesting, never thought of using alcohol with chimney starter.

When it's cold outside, nothing like the weed burner. Up and going in about 1 minute.
Most of the time in the past oil and paper towel.
Lately I have been using alcohol 2 oz (80 cc) on left and 2 oz on right of large. I let it soak in a little longer then light. I seem to be getting less soot build up on the inside of the dome.
I need to try SWOkla-Jerry's method.

I like the cubes or the starter sticks. I break the sticks into 1/4's and only use 2 pieces (1/2 of stick) and get to temp in about 20 minutes. I break the BGE squares in half and use both halves.

MAPP Pro torch. They don't sell MAPP gas here anymore.

Weed burner, but I still use electric when I can't find a lighter for the weed burner LOL. The electric one works fine but is a little slower and a lot less dramatic!
-
Home Depot has Benzomatic mini tanks with a trigger that looks like a spray bottle.
The trigger causes the spark, rather than needing a lighter or other spark. -
Used to use electric with the large and found if I left the porch always felt I had to be standing there and make sure the flames did not burn the cord. Been on MAPP 4+ years and very happy.
-
burned up 3 electrics :( two with reg use and the third because I forgot it for about 5 minutes and it was toast! I use the map torch or oil and paper towels.

Electric starter in a chimney - 5 minutes... pull starter and let chimney work another 5 minutes... pour coals on top of lump and BGE up to temp within 20 of starting processKent Madison MS

I definately go electric for multiple reasons.
1)WIND
2)TIME
3)I DON'T HAVE TO STAND OVER IT TO WATCH IF IT CAUGHT OR NOT. -
I have for years usued the starters. First it was green heat gell and it was great, then I couldn't get that any more and moved to the cubes. Once again I was thinking that that was great. Then last month I could no longer get that and got a mapp torch. This is much faster, and way more fun. I have my eye on a looftlighter next, but the mapp torch is great.

i ordered the looft lighter that jeffinsgf posted. will see how that works. my mapp torch quit working so i thought i would try this. it looks interesting.
