Ants, Help Please

I have ants repeatedly building mounds in my shed. I read that if you sprinkle a chalk line they will not cross it. Is this so? If so, where can I buy a big ole bag of chalk? Any other tips or tricks are welcome.

Amdro works great. They'll be gone in the a.m. You can pick up at H.D. or Lowes.

What kind of ants?
Red ants or fire ants really hate Amdro. I buy a bag of it and keep it in an old shaker canister of kraft parmesan cheese. I spread it around and they are gone in a day or so.
Black ants don't seem to be affected by it in the same way. -
Thanks, that is what I use to kill them, but I am looking for a way to stop them frome getting into the shed in the first place.

Yes, red ants.

Have you tried the "over and out" products? They work like fertilizer in that you spread them across the entire property.
They are supposed to prevent ants "all season" for whatever that means. -
Instant grits works great on fire ants. I know it sounds stupid but once I tried it the mound never came back. pour on mound and wait about 1 hr. Then dump a large pot of hot water on it. by then the Queen has eaten and when the grits expand the ants die. Also don't have to worry about the dogs eating the grass.

salt works, used it is dry desert areas

Semolina Pilchard,
How can you find them under the snow?

We have used the grit solution and it works great

I use lots of Amdro in Oregon for small sugar ants. We used to have lots of them and I really got after them last year. They pack the stuff back to the nest and feed the queen with it. Results in wiping out the colony. Need to stay on it since the neighbors ants will come over when their ants discover that yours are gone. Then kill them!!!!
I keep several containers outside in the spring, when I see any activity in the yard I sprinkle some around. -
I should have bought stock in Ambro. I've used a bunch of it over the years and it work very well. Haven't used since yesterday. Fire ants love our sandy soil.

My son is deathly allergic to fire ants, so I know how to kill them. If you live on a normal suburban lot, sprinkle 1/6 - 1/4 pound of amdro around once a month. Don't water the next day.

The reason ants wont cross a chalk line is because when you drag the chalk across the ground, it disrupts the chemical trail they have left behind to find food. You can disrupt the trail with your finger.
The basics of keeping ants or any insects away are to cut back any plant or tree branches that rub up against the building.
Also when using ant killer like amdro, keep in mind that the ants colonies can satellite out. and that's why they come back to the same spot. There is some reason they find that spot so desireable. That's why hot soapy water can also remove the ants. The soap remains behind and makes that location, less desirable. I've heard adding cayenne to the water helps too. -
There is no snow in my shed
