Tried my hand at the "Caveman" method last night. Don't know why I waited so long. I threw in some Jack Daniel's chips for smoke. Steak came out great! Along with some corn, a baked potato and shrimp cocktail. We figured it was a meal that would cost at least $100 in a restaurant.

  • Looks great. Caveman is my prefered method of coooking a steak too, can't beat it. $100.00 at a good restaurant? it still probably wouldn't taste as good as the Egg.

Ubbeilable never heard of that, how about directions. No way it can be as simple as placing the steak directly on coals. Any problems to watch for... so interesting. I can,t seem to log on without seeing something new. overwhelming!!!

Nice looking plate! 8 - ),,, I still can't believe that the meat doesn't come out tasting of charcoal!! Do you need to fan any dust/ash off before you put the meat on?

No taste of charcoal at all. Just brushed the stuck on pieces off. I would say I had it on the coals about 2 minutes per side. Then shut the egg down and roasted it on the grid for approximately 5-6 minutes. We like our steaks rare. I didn't tell my fiance how I cooked it until after dinner. He couldn't believe how good it was.
  • What temp were cooking the corn and potato at? 350-400*?

very common in india...cooking meat directly on hot coals; and wouldn't caveman technically be meat on a spit or stick over open flames; like in the cartoons?

Exactly. The potato for about 1 1/2 hours, the corn for 1/2 an hour. Comes out great. The husk and silks come off so easy and the corn is sweet. I picked those up at the farmer's market yesterday. Last of the season.

We live in the Palm Springs area of CA. The weather has been so perfect this fall. We're averaging 75 - 80 and sunny. I even have 11 tomatoes growing on a couple of plants left from the summer!

  • Looks great Fluffyb, it looks like the steaks are just right!
  • Thanks Fluffy. The dinner looked great. Any tips on the caveman cooking? Will i just lay the steak on the coal for 2 min each side?

You''ll find out how addictive this forum is. It's amazing how much I've learned in a short six month period. Everyone is so helpful. I don't think there's a question that can't be answered by someone. Makes using your egg so much easier and fun. Nicest group of people you'd ever want to meet.

I'm thinking my wife wouldn't eat it if she thought it had been lying on the coals and I don't think I could hide it from her.

Thanks Ross. And thank you for introducing me to the Earthbox. I thought those tomato plants were dead. Now I am babying them. Can't believe we may have home grown tomatoes at Christmas.
  • I made the mistake of telling my wife and she turned her nose up at it. I will probably do it and not tell her!
