Preferred wood for Prime Rib?

Bought a 4 lb bone out Prime (choice) Rib for dinner and planning a reverse sear this time. Looked at a few recipes, and didn't really see any recomendations for wood chunks. I have Oak, Hickory and Mesquite to choose from (I'm not going to consider the Maple and Apple options for this one )
Rubbed with crushed garlic and chopped fresh rosemary for now, will add kosher salt and coarse pepper about 15 minutes prior. I'm leaning towards the Oak, with Mesquite second, but wide open to opinions and reasoning.

I like Apple and cherry.

Form those three I would vote oak first, hickory/oak second, and hickory third.
A care package from swamprb earlier this year was filled with splits from some oak barrels that held some high dollar red wine. I love using that stuff.

Why not Apple? It would be my first choice. But since you will not consider it, Oak would be my second choice.

That's gotta be like gold!
How'd you manage that?South SLO County -
I always associate Apple with being a little sweet, and I primarily use it for Ribs. Just seems like the wrong direction to me.
I get these pre conceived notions, and it takes a bit to convince me to change. I MIGHT be a little stubborn. :evil:South SLO County -
When you thing about it, it's always fun to share a little of what you have or what you know. It happens fairly regular around this group. :laugh:Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery
