Fire Grate for LBGE

Ok how do you guys and Gals place the bottom fire grate on the egg? The grate has a taper and I have tried it with the taper down and taper up. I find using a wiggle stick disrupts the placement of the grate during a cook. Especially in the mini and this leads to coals gettting into the bottom of the clean out.
It seems with the taper up I have less of a problem.
Does it really matter?
Just finished up some Buffalo wings and 4 breast on the LBGE and had to use a wiggle stick to get the temp up. My fault mostly I just emptied a bag of RO into the egg and loaded it with dust.
Shame on me. As I always say "You remember what causes you the most PAIN."

personally I place mine so the taper is turned down, but not sure it makes all that much difference in the great scheme of things! OTOH here's an easy solution to the dust problem. I made a simple wooden frame and covered the bottom with 1/2" hardware cloth. Nearing the end of a bag I use it to shift out the dust and then pour the good lump back into my favorite container for loading BGEs - an old fashioned coal bucket!

I would think that if the tapers are down the ash would be less likely to collect(=better air flow). Im not sure which way that is with the edges.

That screen looks like a nice idea.

Forgive me, I know this does not answer your question, but I made a fire grate out of some heavy gauge expanded metal. This increased my air flow big time, and decreased the width of my vent openings. I have had no need for a wiggle switch since the change.

That could work. I like the screen idea for the dust also.

Got a pic of your grate? Not sure what Expanded Metal is.
