Looking at getting an egg soon. I cook for two to four people most of the time but on weekends will grill or smoke for 8-10 people. Should I go with the large or the medium egg?

LARGE. You won't ever regret it.

That is what I thought I would hear. Thanks for the response.

I'm sorta the same way, i.e. usually for 2 or 3 but sometimes for 10 or 12. Absolutly minimally go for the large. For the modest price difference between the L and XL, I got the XL and have no regrets whatsoever. Look at it this way - it's likely the last cooker/grill/smoker you'll ever need to buy. Good luck with it......PeterB

Thanks.

Large (for now, you will eventually get another) as there are more accessories available from the Mothership as well as from after-market suppliers.
Just my $1 less $.98.

Auburnegger,
I hall sizes of eggs except for the XL. There is just my wife and all most of the time.
With only the Large I can easily cook for the both of use and also for the whole clan which is 24 people. 12 adults and 12 grandkids from 12 years down.
I do have to think about what I am cooking, if steaks on the large only we feed some then cook and feed.
Most everything else I can get by with the large. After getting the other sizes it is really nice to cook side dishes or items that take different temps.
For my wife and I, I really love the darn mini. On the mini, I can cook easily for the wife and I as well as for 2 or 3 additional grandkids.
From your post either the large or medium would be a good choice.
If I were buying new, knowing what I know, I would get a large and probably the mini. I use the mini the most of all the eggs. I use the the mini more that the med. & small combined.
The large is a great first choice egg.

Here's a little math to help you decide:
Med grate is 15" diameter
Lg is 18
XL is 24
Converted that means"
Med has 176 sq inches of grilling space
Lg has 254
XL has 452
Personally I feel the med is out of the question for your needs, but the Large would suffice. The XL has some issues so if $ is no object - when purchased well - you could buy a large and a small for the price of a XL. Dual eggs open up more possibilities by different temps.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -
go for the large. if you get the medium you'll have to trick it out to fit food for 12. and once that happens you'll regret it until you get a large or a small/mini as backup.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like the large it is.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the measurements. Large seems to be the overwhelming choice.

Makes sense. Thanks for the advice.

I recommend to go with the Large/Small Combo. The Large is great for large cooks and low and slow cooks. The small is obviously good for small cooks, and GREAT for tailgating. I did 9lbs of porkloin and fed 20 people at the last tailgate on the small, it was great. Clone won too, going to beat up on our Big Ten rival Iowa this weekend.

I am picking your boys in our weekly college pickem we do. Feel good about that game. Little nervous with the Tigers going to Starkville against State.
-
That is a tough line on Auburn, but I think you will be okay. ISU has won something like 9 out of the last 10 games against the Chokeyes with the spread, and won scratch 7 out of the last 10. The Clones are a good bet this week. A more realistic spread would be ISU +3.5, not +13.5! The national media doesn't understand the rivalry though.
-
Love the insider info! I am taking State to cover the line but I feel Auburn will win it late.
-
I have the large and love it. I think you'll be fine with your weekend guests if you decide on the large.
War Eagle! :woohoo: -
If you have the money for an XL I'd buy a Large and a Small.
The XL and medium are great cookers, and they have a fair amount of Eggcessories; however, from what you said the Large/Small combo would be ideal. -
Definately go large
-
I like the Large/ Medium combo. The Small has to small of bottom vent so you need a different ash tool. The medium is just small enough to take camping, vacation, tailgating etc. and still has a good amount of cooking space. With a 15" dia. you can also fit a dutch oven on it. A dutch oven will not fit on small or mini.
Best of luck.

You'll find that owners of every size will tell you why theirs is great, but I have yet to meet anyone who bought a large and regretted it. -
I went with the xlarge as the price was not thatr uch difference.
