Cypress Table Finish

I am getting a new large cypress table and was wondering, from your past experience, what is the best product to use to protect the wood. Have you changed the color or just used a clear product. It seems like I read alot of people use a spar product. As always, thanks in advance for your imput.

The one I bought was a display and the store used spar varnish to finish it. It is OK but does show burn marks when there is a cinder misplaced on it. Does happenm if you have to take the great out of the mini because you are doing a 4 lb butt for 6 hours.

FlaPoolman, that table is beautiful, it looks like the finish is 1/4'' thick. Is that a cypress table?

Exactly what Pat (FlaPoolman) said...4 -5 coats on mine with touch ups every few months...

Thanks. Thats 6 coats. It's a factory BGE table. This is the before pic (6 years of memories I had to sand away)

Pat, was that oil or water base spar urethane and was it hard to apply without leaving brush marks. It's unbelieveable how well it turned out.

Solvent based and the brush marks were not a problem but did sand with 220 grit sandpaper between coats

That is what I will be using. It seems like being a 'EggHead' you need to have a camera on your belt, next to the pager and cell phone. :laugh:

I stained it with Minwax stain and put on three coats of spar urethane:

I coated mine with Flood brand "CWF-UV5" clear fence and deck coating. Real easy to apply and recommended by BGE: (See bottom of page)

Added a couple of pieces of remnant 3/4" granite for the prep surfaces.

Brad, what color stain did you use on the table, it looks great!

Thanks, SM, it took a couple of tries to find the right color. It's Minwax "Early American," color code 230 with their Helmsman Spar Urethane, Clear Satin finish.
