My Lid Block

For ever I have been using a block of hardwood for a lid block, like when starting up with an electric starter, or doing some high temp grilling. I rustled up some 1/4" rod scraps and made this prototype. This one has opposing 90° angles where it rests on the rim, the next one will have "U" shaped pieces on both ends.
Any ideas for improvement??

Slick idea...
I hate it when my wood block slips.

Hey very cool. But maybe so if you turn it the other way it would give a larger or smaller open space? so if on one side it would be two inches and turn it the other way and it would be 1 inch? make any sense?

i would use flat instead of round pieces... not for any reason but because the lip that it is on is flat...
plus coat in silicone to stop the slippage as GG suggestedhappy eggin

Maybe an extension out the front w/ a wooden handle so you could grab it and not burn your hand when you were ready to move it out of the way???

Good idea. That will take some engineering, which is always fun.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

Flat stainless in smaller shapes is hard to come by.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

I thought of that, but it throws the balance off.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

I think that would require some extensive testing on a large, medium, and mini in the NE Atlanta area.
I think it is terrific and a great idea. I use the handle of an old BBQ fork to hold mine open and inch or so. Us Georgia folk ain't as book smart as you mountain folk. -

What is the need for a lid block? Help me understand. Thanks

I guess for me it's just another venting option, mainly when starting my fire..... I hate to have the lid completely open because of sparks. I also end sear steaks and chops, so during those few minutes, it eliminates flashback and still lets me see whats happening.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery
