Awaiting BGE delivery

Just wanted to say hello. I've been lurking around for a few weeks. We're getting a medium BGE delivered this Saturday. We just repoured our patio and disposed of a Broilmaster bbq. Been using a Weber kettle for a few weeks to fill in the gap. I'll admit I'm getting a Solaire infrared grill, too. My original plan was to propose an Egg next year, but my wife was intrigued by them at the store and wanted to get one--my work was done, way easier than expected.

I'm actually a little more excited about the egg, as it seems kind of challenging. I'll be searching around here for tips and hints. Hopefully the DVD that comes with the Egg will get us going with the basics, like temperature control.

We got a nest, cover, plate setter, vertical chicken roaster, ash tool and, obviously, a bag of charcoal. I have an instant read thermometer. We didn't get the firestarter cubes or the electric starter--I'm thinking I should tell them to bring a box of cubes. I'm also sensing a need for a probe thermometer--anyone get one at Brookstone? I can see the need for some specialty grids in the future, as I know we're gonna want to do vegetables and fish/seafood. I'm hoping to get good enough to make pizza and bread on the Egg.

Hope everyone has a good week. I'm already looking forward to the weekend and our new toys!!!!

I would tell them not to bring the infrared grill, you won't need it. Welcome aboard! -RP

    Congrats!!

    Welcome to the cult.

You will definitely enjoy the EGG.

BTW, if you can not get the firestarter cubes, many posters just use a paper towel with cooking oil to start their EGG.

congrats on your first egg.. i say that because if you are like most you will want another ;)

welcom to the forum there are alot of really informative people around here don't be shy if you have a question ask away..

looks like you have all the equitment to get started. yes tell them to bring some starter cubes. later you may find better ways to light your egg but the starters work pretty well.

here are a couple links that may help you

Joking aside, don't get the infrared. You will find yourself cooking solely on the egg, and you won't be able to sell the infrared for what you paid for it. Use the money for eggcesories, steaks, pork butts, ribs, and brisketts.

    Welcome aboard!

congrats, "Grandpas Grub" has an excellent email with all the links to accessories and stuff. Great help but these people on the Forum can not be beat for any advise, just ask!! JD
  • I got one two weeks ago, so far everything is easier than I expected. Yesterday we tried smoking (ribs) for the first time, and had no trouble keeping temperature at 250F all afternoon.

So far we have done chicken, burgers, steaks and ribs. Next up maybe a paella, then (if I fell brave) some pulled pork, or else jerk pork.

I'll second that. Trade it for a large egg. You will end up with more eggs anyway.

the bge will make the best steak you ever had, if its not to late cancel the hotdog cooker until you get some experience with the egg. thats alot of money for a hotdog cooker. forget brookstone, get a thermapen and then check out this place for grate upgrades. seriously, folks that get an egg dont get an infrared later on, they get a second egg.

Skip the gasser. I have a LBGE and the only thing that the gasser is used for is a quick hot dog or when my wife cooks...(a small would surely take care of the dog/burger thing). See I'm already wanting to add to the egg family....

Better than the cubes is the napkin with cooking oil....

No need to spend $ on firestarters.

    medford massachusetts?

welcome aboard. and to echo what fishless says about the infrared.... think of the best reason you can to get the infrared. whatever it is, the BGE can cook it better. easily.

BTW, keep the first 10-12 cooks 400 degrees or less.

This will allow your gasket to season.

Many EGGers have had problems with new gaskets catching fire or the adhesive melting (which seals the dome shut).

This is one best, to have the explanation and the links in one quick place for BGE stuff. Also agree about The Naked Whiz website. Thanks GG. JD

The felt gaskets (original gaskets) don't catch fire, they do melt. Adhesive membrane will release before the felt will melt.

If the dome to base is not aligned properly there is more of a chance of adhesive/gasket failure.

I am not a fan of the low temp break in or curing theory. With that said, it is better to error on the side of caution.

Do the 'dollar bill' test. If your egg dome seals I would suggest keeping the 'calibrated' dome temp under 500° - 550°.

That's great. Congratulations on your new baby. Some other essentials that are over looked, that you eventually will want a big supply are:

    Latex gloves
    many different spices
lots of foil (I've found there is no substitute for Reynolds Wrap)
    aluminum pie pans for drippings
a decent bottle opener for beer

as far as starting the fire, I prefer this method. Picked up at Harbor Freight for less than $20.00, and saved the proplane tank from the gasser:

I must agree. At least get your egg, use it and after a few cooks then decide on the IR cooker.

It would be really sad if you got the IR cooker then after getting the egg wishing you had put the money somewhere else.

    GG
  • Everybody's enthusiam for the egg is great. I doubt I'm gonna get too far backing out of the IR. Hopefully, it won't be an expensive hot dog cooker in the winter. We're gonna use both hopefully. My wife swears she's gonna work on the egg as our son is a major carnivore and likes pulled pork/chicken, grilled chicken,...

hotdopgs are better on the egg too, for what it's worth.

everything's better over lump. infrared is basically a toaster oven

I Would really try to talk to them about trading on an egg. or hold off on delivery on it till you have the egg a few weeks. You will not use it I bet. We have 4 and one in our FL home and will take the mini to FL this winter with us. we cook on our eggs year round here in Maine, even in 3 feet of snow and would not dream of anything else. I think about the only "other" bbqrs on here are competition ones that they use for huge cooks. Julie in Maine
  • I think you will enjoy your Solaire for the quick weekday cooks. The best meals will be prepared via the egg, but both are fantastic at what they do.
    Enjoy your new toys
  • Oh, I'm ready for the grill porn. Cruddy last minute shot of a pork loin cooking indirectly on the Weber last week.

Welcome to this food crazy ceramic cult. If you like to cook, instead of just following recipes, the Egg will become second nature. I agree with the others- use the Egg a month or so and you will likely not want anything else taking up patio space.
    Are you in Medford OR?
    Al
  • no. my street is Medford Circle. Northbrook, IL
  • Another good guess, but again, no. I live on Medford Circle in Northbrook, IL
  • :cheer: What a day. You all know how to make someone feel welcome. Lots of good advice. I will definitely check out the recommended websites.

A big thank you to all who replied. Now I reeeaaalllly can't wait for Saturday. We have dinner reservations for a new restaurant in the city, so I guess I'm gonna be bbqing lunch. Maybe some shrimp and scallops with a Sauvignon Blanc.

I'm still gonna get the gasser. It probably would have been smarter to start with the Egg, since my wife likes a charcoal grill better. We'll see how the two get used. At least I didn't get the $5000 Lynx, but I did drop some coin on the Solaire.
  • :woohoo: Man, even a cool blue glass plate!! Just for hotdogs--that btw, look great. I will buy bar glasses if they're in that blue family, even if I don't need them, but of course I do.
