After weeks of bad weather and sanding off 7 years of seasoning and memories Egg 1 is back in the refinished table. After the feed back from my friends here on the forum I decided to hold off on the stainless top until it starts showing some wear.
Before
After sanding, 1 coat of colonial maple stain, and 6 coats of spar urethane.
Egg 1 back in with new fire ring and grate.
The stainless top when it starts to show wear.
Now the wife is gonna make me keep it clean :(

Looks good. I have to let the wood dry for a few weeks before I finish my new small table.
-
Why in then heck would cover that up? Natural beauty is the best thing that we have to enjoy.Go back to the good old days when manual labor and the end results give us a great product.I say keep the natural wood finish and if you go to stainless all I can say is shame on you.
-
After seeing the pictures of that table, I sure hated the idea you were going to cover it up.
In the very early posts about the top I really liked the idea of a table with the ss top. Once I saw the finish, I kept thinking, no he really isn't going to cover that up is he.
My hat is off to you, it is one beautiful table.

Thanks. When I do a permanent build I might try one of your concrete tops. They look great.
-
Worth the wait. Nice job on your table. Easy to see a lot of thought went into it.
-
LOL The stainless sounded good before the refinish but I'm still not gonna throw it out. Even covered the Florida weather beats it up pretty bad so the steel top will buy me an extra couple years.
-
Now that I think about it why would you put a sheet of stainless on the deck of a boat with teak or mahogany? Sounds stupid to me when that finish you have going on for you.Just my two cents.Don't get mad guy it is just my verdict on the issue at hand.
-
Thanks Kent. Seems everyone here on the forum agrees with my wife so the custom cut top will be retired to the shed for a few years but it's there if I need it. Nice part is I don't have to anchor it and can set it on for big parties. Now I just need more bottle openers.
-
Best reply to that is more BEER.Enjoy your weekend.
-
Thought process was easy clean up and not to worry about setting grates etc,, on the wood. Guess the wood came out too good to cover but I'll keep the steel for the future. Also easy to put on and off without mounting so when my beer spilling buddies are over I can just set it on top. :woohoo: .

Looks great! I'm planning to build a table before Christmas. I hope it comes out as nice looking as yours.

Hey Dad,
Good job on that finish. It seems like yesterday I was there looking over your shoulder watching u prepare dinner. I can't wait to get back to the east coast.
Love,

Look forward to seeing you too son. While not convenient to own an egg while in the navy I'm sure you'll adapt. Your Mom and I are looking forward to your next visit and now that both larges are ready we can feed the whole neighborhood. Be safe, Love you. Pat

Stain was just a light coat. Poly comes from 6 coats of spar eurathane

Thanks fiver, hope it's 7 more years before I have to do it again
