do I need welders gloves I ask this because I had a hard time getting higher temps. last knight. Today I am doing a dry run, I am up to 650 and can not open the lid without a flame and loss of hair. Top is off and the bottom is open. It is holding at 650 but if I open the top slightly smoke rolls in and temp shoots up to almost 700. How do you guys cook a steak or pizza without going hairless? Or maybe I am doing something wrong. help :pinch:

Yes you do need something...I got welders gloves for Xmas...they are great $40 at HD or Lowes...

Haair vaporizes at those high temps. I had welders gloves, the $5 pair from the orient and after a few months they were useless. Now have a pair of ORKA about $20 a pair. My mistake was getting the short pair. Recomendation the elbow length. Allows me the chance to play with a platesetter with dome at 650F as long as I am quick. Do not plan on holding the hot plate setter to long.

I actually have the silicon gloves, they are short but they wash easily if you handle hot greasy stuff. un-like oven mitts which require washing and stain easy.

Mine get too greasy, I just toss them in the pool or spa and shake to drain and dry.

If the temp zooms when you lift the lid, what you need is a wiggle stick. You have small coals and ash choking off your airflow, hence the explosion in the fire when you lift the lid. Take a coat hanger and straighten it then bend about six inches from the end about 60 degrees. Insert the bent end into the vent door and feel for the holes in the fire grate. Push the wire up into the holes and wiggle it. This will get your air flowing. I don't care for welding gloves, they get saturated with grease and then conduct heat rather than insulate it. -RP

I actually by fireplace gloves, which are thick leather and nearly as heat resistant as welders gloves and just as long.

I buy them in the spring for $2-3 per pair and buy 5-6 pairs. As they get nasty and saturated and worn, I toss them and get another pair.

excuse me - but $40 for a pair of welder's gloves from orange or blue??? Did you get a chunk of the cow they came from as well at that price? I'm QUITE happy with my Orkas and have been burnt mor than once using welders gloves.

I use welders gloves and also have a pair of gloves I bought from Texas BBQ Rub. Both help to keep the heat from burning my hands.
